HONORS: Arruza Named Coach Of The Year; Yellow Jackets Honored

After leading Randolph-Macon to its 11th ODAC title and its first NCAA Championship victory, Pedro Arruza was named Coach of the Year in the state of Virginia by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).

The Yellow Jackets had eight players earn All-State First Team honors: senior offensive lineman Greg Castle(Kenley, N.C./North Johnston), senior running back Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston), senior linebacker Yonis Blanco (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair), junior tight end Sam Tanner (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis), junior offensive lineman Jake Wernle (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove), junior defensive lineman Steve McNair (Elkridge, Md./Howard), junior safety Anthony Williams (Ashburn, Va./Woodgrove) and sophomore kicker Chris Vidal (Wake, N.C./Wake Forest). Senior wide receiver Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) was voted to the All-State Second Team.
Castle was All-ODAC First Team, All-South Region First Team and All-America Third Team. Frederick was All-South Region Second Team and All-ODAC Second Team. Tanner and Wernle were All-ODAC First Team and All-South Region Third Team. Blanco, Hoy, McNair, Williams and Vidal were All-ODAC First Team.

Arruza, in his fifteenth season at R-MC, led the Yellow Jackets to an 8-2 regular-season mark and 6-1 record in ODAC play. R-MC won its eleventh ODAC title, tying Emory & Henry for the most championships in the history of the conference. The Yellow Jackets earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship and received a trip to No 8 John Carroll. R-MC won its first NCAA playoff game in program history with a 23-20 victory over the Blue Streaks. The Yellow Jackets would have their season end at No. 23 Muhlenberg in the second round of the NCAA Championship. R-MC finished No. 18 in the final D3football.com Top 25.
