Patrick Henry To Conference 16?

HanoverCountySports.org can confirm that Patrick Henry High School has submitted a formal request to the Virginia High School League to move from Conference 11 to Conference 16 in the new Reclassification plan set to take effect in September, 2013.

Linda Scarborough, Communications Specialist for Hanover County Public Schools, confirmed to us Monday that the request was submitted.

The VHSL Conference Alignment Committee will take the request under consideration at a meeting, reportedly to be held in December.

Conference 11, in classification 5A South, currently contains nine schools: Patrick Henry, Atlee, Lee-Davis, Henrico, Highland Springs, Deep Run, Douglas Freeman, Mills Godwin and Hermitage.

Conference 16, in classification 5A North, currently contains just three schools: Halifax, Orange, and Albemarle.

The inequity in number, has led to rumors that other schools may switch from 11 to 16 for more balance, but as of this time, there are no substantiated plans for other schools in Conference 11 to request a change.

All of the above schools are in the newly-minted "5A" classification in a six-classification system, going from "1A" to "6A".  These would replace the current "Divisions" found in Group A, Group AA, and Group AAA for football.  So, football will still crown six state champions, but other sports that, until now, have crowned three state champions, one for each "Group", will expand to six.
