Runs were at a premium at Glen Allen High School Friday night.
The Hawks and Jaguars played nine scoreless innings in baseball, with Hanover finally pushing home a run in the tenth to hold on for a tenacious 1-0 win over Glen Allen.
Meanwhile, in softball, Kiandra Mitchum had a one-hit shutout with two outs in the seventh inning holding a 1-0 lead. But Glenn Walters of Glen Allen drew a walk, then Haley Feather tripled to right to drive in Walters, tying the game. On the same play, the throw to third base got away from the third baseman, but left fielder Jessica McLaughlin retrieved the ball, threw a bullet to catch Maura Long at the plate who tagged out Feather, who would have been the winning run.
In the first extra frame, the Hawks retook the lead, as Erica Barrett walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mitchum. Brooke Throckmorton then laced a double in the gap in left center, scoring Barrett.
Mitchum retired the Jags in order in the bottom of the 8th to complete the victory.
Hanover moves to 5-2 in the Capital, 7-5 overall. Glen Allen falls to 3-4 in the Capital, 8-5 overall.
