In the battle of #2 versus #3, the victors were the home team.
Prince George scratched a run across in the sixth inning and rode the tremendous pitching of Jennifer Woodlief to a 1-0 win over Lee-Davis, ending their winning streak at 12 games. The Royals will likely ascend to the #2 position in the next Times-Dispatch Top Ten rankings, behind unbeaten Patrick Henry.
Woodlief opened the bottom of the sixth with a single to center and was replaced by courtesy runner Brooke Ward. After a sacrifice bunt pushed Ward to second, she came around to score on a single to right by Sydney Landreth.
Woodlief then held off the best Confederates threat of the night in the seventh, getting Haleigh Cottrell to pop out to second with two runners on base to end the game.
Lee-Davis moves to 12-2 overall and return to District play at Henrico Tuesday night.
For their part, the Royals improve to 12-1 overall. Remember the name Jennifer Woodlief. After holding Lee-Davis to only one hit, striking out eight, she and her Royals teammates may become the biggest obstacle to any Hanover County school holding out hope to capture the 2012 Central Region title.
