WEEK ONE FINALS:

Atlee, in a classic season opener, gets a huge road victory over Deep Run on opening night.  Down 24-14, Atlee scored two touchdowns to take a 28-24 lead.  The Wildcats later took the lead late, 37-35, but Atlee scored a winning touchdown to take the 41-37 triumph.

This win may turn out to be a much bigger victory for the 2012 Raiders than their 55-14 thumping of Deep Run was for last year's team.  This team is young, hungry, and has proven they can come back on the road and get a win.

-------------------

Bad news for Patrick Henry, who host Atlee next Friday, and are smarting after a 41-0 loss in their opener at Hanover.  The Patriots threw five interceptions in the first half alone, seven for the game, and the Hawks took full advantage.  All 27 first half Hanover points came off turnovers.

L.J. Jones rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns.  Andrew Knizner took about 75 percent of the quarterback snaps, with Sam Rogers spending most of the night at H-Back, completing his only two pass attempts.  The Hawks begin strong in this, the most highly anticipated season in school history.

-------------------

Lee-Davis had a tall task, hosting Hermitage in their opener, and they fell, as expected, 35-7.  They did get on the scoreboard on the Panthers, something Fork Union cannot say they did two weeks ago.  The Confederates will travel to Hopewell for a good test against an improved Blue Devils team next Friday.

FINALS:

Hanover 41, Patrick Henry 0
Atlee 41, Deep Run 37
Hermitage 35, Lee-Davis 7
Glen Allen 39, J.R. Tucker 15
Douglas Freeman 18, James River 6
Mills Godwin 20, Monacan 7
Armstrong 24, Thomas Jefferson 12
L.C. Bird 14, Thomas Dale 7
Manchester 45, Matoaca 30
Prince George 14, Clover Hill 7
Collegiate 28, Trinity Episcopal 0
Midlothian 29, Powhatan 7
Highland Springs 48, Meadowbrook 28
Varina 14, Dinwiddie 7
Monticello 51, George Wythe 12

FOOTBALL FRIDAY IS HERE!

High school football fans, your wait is OVER!

The first full week of football in the Central Region, and for Hanover County schools is Friday night!  Atlee opens the season on the road with a tough test against running back Evan Hinkle and the Deep Run Wildcats.  Lee-Davis is at home, but with an even tougher opening test, welcoming two-time Division 6 regional champion Hermitage to Mechanicsville.  The Panthers are 1-0 after a 38-0 pasting of Fork Union Military Academy on ESPNU two weeks ago.

OUR RADIO GAME OF THE WEEK: PATRICK HENRY AT HANOVER

The Patriots look for their first win over Hanover since 2007, while the long-anticipated senior season of Sam Rogers, Andrew Knizner, L.J. Jones and others begins on Chamberlayne Road.  In their decade-long history, the Hawks have already captured three Division 5 regional titles, but have never won the crown in back-to-back years (2007, 2009, 2011).  The Hawks were not sharp in their lone scrimmage two weeks ago against Eastern Region power Lake Taylor.  Will they be ready?  Will they have too much for Patrick Henry?

ON THE AIR: WHAN Radio, at 102.9 FM and 1430 AM, beginning at 6:30pm.  Not near a radio or going to the game?  Listen online OR on your smartphone!  We'll have a link to game audio HERE at HanoverCountySports.org at the top of our page!

Football Is Almost Here!!!

Three weeks from tonight, we'll be streaming WHAN Radio's coverage of Patrick Henry vs. Hanover on opening night of the 2012 high school football season!

In the coming weeks, HanoverCountySports.org, in conjunction with the Hanover Herald-Progress, will be presenting extensive team previews of all four county schools.

After a season where three teams made the playoffs and one ascended all the way to the state semifinals (and that team returns its core!), what will our county's student-athletes do for an encore?

What we'll be watching early....

1) Who plays at quarterback for Hanover?
2) Who replaces Israel Vaughan under center for Lee-Davis?
3) How will Kenner Berry's time at QB in the 2011 playoffs help his development for 2012?
4) Is the loss of Raymon Minor too much for a possibly thin Patrick Henry team, or is it addition by subtraction?  Depends upon your perspective.....

There's no doubt the most pressure is found west of Ashland, since Patrick Henry hasn't recorded a winning season since 2008.  Patriot faithful are not used to a significant down period, something that hasn't happened at PH since the late 1970s/early 1980s before the arrival of Ray Long in the fall of 1982.

There's no doubt also that the highest expectations are found on Chamberlayne Road, where Sam Rogers enters his fourth and final year as the heart of the Hawks team.  Add Andrew Knizner's versatility, a third quarterback option coming from JV, the return of L.J. Jones at tailback, and pieces of last year's defense returning, and it's obvious to see that this is "THE" year for Hanover if they want to achieve new heights of success. Ending their first decade as a football program, Hanover already has three Division 5 Regional Titles to their credit, but, in each season they won it, they would hit the road and lose in the state semifinals, sometimes in heartbreaking fashion (see Phoebus, 2009).....

Rogers, Knizner, Jones and other returnees plus a new influx of talent.  Can Hanover finally win a Division 5 Regional Title in an even year, getting a home game in the state semifinal round?  Can Hanover finally play at Scott Stadium for a state championship?

Or....will something unforeseen derail everything, such as the injury to Rogers in mid-season 2011?

Our first stop on the pre-season football tour is Saturday morning for the Green/White Scrimmage at Hanover.  Practice is at 7:30, scrimmage begins at 9am.

Monday Golf Result.....

"3-2" Doesn't Payoff For Patriots; Cosby Snares Title...

Pardon the Patrick Henry Patriots if they cringe from this day forward every time they hear a final score of 3-2.

In early May, their undefeated season went by the boards due to a 3-2 defeat at Hanover.  After winning the rest of the way in the regular season, the Colonial District tournament, and the first two games of the Central Region tourney, Patrick Henry became the last county team to square off against the Cosby Titans in the title game a week ago in Prince George.  After holding a 2-0 lead most of the evening, Cosby roared back with three runs in the sixth inning to snare the Region crown....3-2.

And so it would be that the Central Region would dominate the first two rounds of the State Group AAA Tournament this week.  Cosby breezed past Oakton in the quarters Tuesday and crushed Broad Run 10-2 in Friday's first semifinal at Westfield High School in Chantilly.  Patrick Henry traveled to Stone Bridge in Ashburn and shut out the team with the most wins in the state (24) on Tuesday, then used Katie Woody and Sam Moore home runs, and the one-hit pitching of Emma Mitchell, to breeze past Osbourn Park, 7-0.

In the state championship game, there would be some cases of role reversal.  This time, Cosby got on the board in the first inning, scoring a run on three straight hits to start the bottom of the frame.  Meagan Jones singled to left, Ellen Sweat slapped a bunt into no man's land near shortstop for a hit, then Chelsea Whitcomb laced a double to right center scoring Jones for a 1-0 lead.  Mitchell settled down, retiring the next three batters on a strikeout, foul out to third and ground out to keep the Titan lead at a run.

The Patriots had a very hard time getting the offense going against Whitcomb on the mound.  Chelsea, a sophomore, allowed only two batters to reach base in the first five innings (a walk and a HBP).  Cosby added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Bridgett Blakeley scored on an Ellen Sweat single.  Blakeley had opened the inning with a double.

Patrick Henry Coach Matt Crowder told his girls going into the sixth inning, "This is the inning where they got us last week.  Let's get them this time."  The Patriots responded to his clarion call.

After Ellen Davidson smoked a liner that was snagged out of the air by Whitcomb, saving a sure single to center, Paige Mitchell got the first PH hit of the day on a single to right.  Allison Tingler's grounder to third was bobbled, the error allowing Tingler to reach base.  Sam Moore popped out and Katie Woody stepped to the plate, two on with two out...down two runs.

Woody responded, sending the ball to the wall in the gap in left center for a two-run double, scoring Mitchell and Tingler.  The game was suddenly tied, the Patriot fans on their feet, the PH dugout rejuvenated.  Madison Gilman grounded out to strand Woody and end the inning.

Cosby went in order in the sixth, as did Patrick Henry in the top of the seventh as Whitcomb posted two of her five strikeouts in the frame.  The Titans entered the bottom of the seventh ready to claim the state crown.

The first two Cosby batters were retired by Emma Mitchell, but number nine hitter Sam Quinn reached on an infield single at second to open the door for the dangerous Titan top of the order.  Meagan Jones slapped  an infield single.  Then Ellen Sweat walked to load the bases, and up stepped Chelsea Whitcomb.

Five weeks earlier, Hanover County softball fans will recall Whitcomb stepping up with the bases loaded in the 7th inning at Atlee with the Raiders holding a 1-0 lead.  Whitcomb launched a grand slam home run and the Titans won 4-1.

Emma Mitchell bore down, and with everything on the line, induced Whitcomb to ground to Ashley Samuels at second who threw her out, and we went to extra innings.

Both teams went down in order in both the eighth and ninth, save a Madison Gilman single.  Two defensive gems of note for the Patriots included a double play spearheaded by Ashley Samuels to end the 8th inning, tagging out Alex Beyer, who had walked, then throwing out Holly Stargardt at first.  To open the 9th, left fielder Ellen Davidson made a nice running catch on a would-be hit by Karie Burgess.

With one out in the top of the 10th, sophomore center fielder Kendall Thomas laid down a perfect bunt in front of Whitcomb to reach base.  Davidson's sacrifice attempt fell short, as Whitcomb was able to throw to second for the force out on Thomas, while Davidson reached first.  Then Paige Mitchell smacked a single into center.  Davidson attempted to reach third base, but the throw by center fielder Meagan Jones was on target and she was tagged out at third to end the inning.  The defensive stop seemed to spark the Titans into the bottom of the 10th, as their top of the order was due up.  Their top three, to that point, were responsible for six of their eight hits through nine innings.

Jones began the frame sending a double down the right field line.  Ellen Sweat was intentionally walked to create force play situations, though it meant Whitcomb coming to the plate.  Chelsea grounded out to short, advancing the runners to second and third.  The Patriots then intentionally walked Savanna Ols to load the bases, playing with the hopes of inducing two outs and utilizing the option of a force at home plate on a ground ball.

But, instead, on Emma Mitchell's 147th pitch of the game, Beyer got enough bat on the ball to bounce a single into short right field.  It would be Mitchell's last pitch as a Patriot.  Jones scored the winning run and the celebration commenced for the Titans.  The Patriots dejectedly walked toward the third base dugout to prepare for the traditional post-game handshakes.

Patrick Henry would not be hurt by a costly error in this game with Cosby, as the Titans were the only ones to commit a miscue, and only one at that.  It was a well played defensive game from both teams.  Whitcomb scattered five hits, striking out four, walking just one, Paige Mitchell to open the game.  Mitchell struck out six Titans, walked three and gave up three runs on ten hits.

"We just didn't have the answer for their 1-2-3 hitters," Crowder told reporters after the post-game ceremonies.  "It was just like the last game.  It's very disappointing."

Crowder later spoke, with much emotion, of how proud he was of this team, their accomplishments in 2012, how they never quit in the championship game, and waxed particularly eloquent about his departing seniors.

"I realized today that this was the last time I'd write names like Tingler and Gilman in the lineup.  You get so used to it," Crowder opined.

Patrick Henry finishes the best season in school history at 23-3, as Colonial District Champions, Central Region Runner-Up, and now, State Group AAA Runner-Up, as well as the home of the Region Pitcher of the Year in the UVA-bound Mitchell.

But the last taste of the season was a bitter pill to swallow, for fans, parents, grandparents, and especially for the players and coaches.  As time proceeds, though, that taste will wither away, and the lasting emotions and memories will be of pride, excellence, and the making of a family.

As one player tweeted after the game, "...we weren't just a team, we were a family!"

A family that has etched their place in Patrick Henry athletic history as the best softball team to ever grace the diamond in Ashland.

PH Softball: A Walk In The (Osbourn) Park....

It was a surprisingly easy night for Patrick Henry in the Group AAA State Softball Semifinals.

An Allison Tingler double and a titanic Katie Woody home run opened the scoring in the first inning, putting the Patriots up 2-0.  It would be all Emma Mitchell would need.

In arguably her best game of 2012, Mitchell struck out the first six batters she faced, didn't allow a base runner until an error allowed an Osbourn Park Yellow Jacket to reach first with two out in the sixth inning (she would later be picked off by Madison Gilman), and gave up one lone hit, an infield single in the seventh which really could have been scored an error when Ashley Samuels' throw from the backhand position went into the ground at first, as Osbourn Park never had a chance.  Patrick Henry's 7-0 win over the Northwest Region runner-up improved the Patriots record to 23-2.

There's only one game to go.

It will be a rematch of last Saturday's Central Region Championship in the State Championship Saturday at 2pm when Patrick Henry once again faces Cosby.  The Titans slipped past Patrick Henry 3-2 last week to win the Central Region title, the tying and winning runs coming in after a rare Patrick Henry error.

When asked about what they learned from last week's game with the Titans that will help them get over the hump to win Saturday, some players had ideas....

"We need to be on.  If Emma can pitch like she did tonight and as long as we play defense, we can win," catcher Madison Gilman said.

"Try to remember the batters and what they did," Emma Mitchell replied.

And Katie Woody?  She was part of the error that opened the gates for Cosby's comeback last week.  Her words were maybe the most profound.

"I need to relax, and let the game come to me," Woody said just before a community meeting of coaches, players and parents after the game.

Patrick Henry has looked extremely confident this week, bouncing back from the Cosby loss to win two state playoff games by a combined score of 11-0.  A continued high level of performance by the Patriots, will make it difficult for the Titans, as hot as they've been playing in the second half of the season, to put the Patriots away a second time.

With Mitchell battling Cosby sophomore sensation Chelsea Whitcomb for the second time in eight days, this game promises to be a classic.  One thing is certain: for the second year in a row, the Central Region will win the State Championship.  The question is, will Patrick Henry join their county brethren as state title winners? Atlee won it all in 2002, Hanover in 2006, and Lee-Davis just one year ago.

The Patriots are one stellar performance away from making all of their dreams come true.

Patrick Henry Crosses Stone Bridge, Finds Final Four!

Patrick Henry's softball team entered uncharted and dangerous territory Tuesday night, forced on the road after falling 3-2 to Cosby in the Central Region final.  Their opponent: Stone Bridge, the Northern Region champions who owned the most victories in the state coming into the quarterfinals with a record of 24-2.

After a 100-plus mile road trip, the Patriots arrived, relaxed and ready.  On the field, they returned to flawless defense and found timely hitting in the latter innings.  Combined with the four-hit shutout performance of ace Emma Mitchell, Patrick Henry upended the Bulldogs on their home field 4-0, advancing to Friday's State Group AAA Semifinal.  It will be their first-ever trip to softball's final four.

After both teams missed scoring opportunities during the first four innings, the Patriots struck first in the fifth, taking advantage of three Stone Bridge errors, scoring one run.  They added a run in the top of the sixth when Hunter Glave blooped a single to right, scoring Sam Moore.

PH took the field for the bottom of the sixth in the exact same position they found themselves in the Cosby regional final, up 2-0, six outs away from a win, and facing the top of the opponent's order.  This time, the Patriots came through with flying colors.  The Bulldogs managed a two-out threat in the sixth on a single and a walk, but Mitchell then coerced the next batter to ground right back to the mound, stranding both runners.

The Patriots then added extra protection in the seventh when Ellen Davidson and Paige Mitchell both scored after Moore blasted a double down the left field line to the wall.  Mitchell allowed one double in the seventh, but retired the other three batters she faced.

Stone Bridge finishes the season at 24-3, while Patrick Henry improves to 22-2.  They will face Osbourn Park, the Northwest Region runner-up who also won on the road Tuesday night, upsetting Eastern Region champion Great Bridge 6-4, in the 7pm semifinal Friday night at Westfield High School in Chantilly.  The other semifinal, at 4pm, will pit Cosby, 6-1 victors over Oakton, and Northwest Region champion Broad Run, who held off Hickory 2-1.  Tickets for the game Friday are $10.00 at the gate.  If the Patriots win Friday, they will play for the state championship Saturday at 2pm at Westfield.

Cosby Comeback Snares Title From Patriots....

3-2 has not been a kind final score to Patrick Henry softball.....

Prior to Saturday's Central Region Championship game, the Patriots had only one loss on the ledger, 3-2 at Hanover in early May.  Cosby had a 2-1 record against Hanover teams going into the game, losing to Lee-Davis in early April, getting a comeback road win over Atlee in early May, and their 3-1 win over Lee-Davis in the Regional Semis.

Starters Emma Mitchell and Chelsea Whitcomb would make things tough on batters all evening long.  And, after surviving an early error on defense, Patrick Henry hit the board in their half of the 1st inning.

Paige Mitchell walked, then Allison Tingler singled.  A sacrifice bunt from Sam Moore advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd for Katie Woody, who grounded to first.  The ball was mishandled by Jen Helms, and Mitchell raced home for the game's first run.

Madison Gilman was next to the plate and popped a fly ball to center.  Cosby center fielder Meagan Jones threw a bullet to the plate as Allison Tingler came home, barely eluding the tag of catcher Holly Stargardt, and the Patriots were up 2-0.

The Titans went down in order in the second and only got a runner as far as second base once through the first four innings.  But when the Patriots got runners on 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the fourth but couldn't push them across, the cracks began.

A 1-2-3 fifth inning by Emma Mitchell gave the Patriots more confidence.  The sixth would be much different.  Leadoff hitter Jones started with a single up the middle.  Ellen Sweat followed with a "through the eye of a needle" single just missing the gloves of both Moore at 3rd and Paige Mitchell at shortstop.  Then, Chelsea Whitcomb stepped to the plate and helped her own cause, singling to left, plating Jones to make it 2-1.

Then came the play of the game.  Savanna Ols grounded a ball to first.  The Patriots uncharacteristically mishandled the easy play at first, giving Sweat time to come home to tie the game.  In the ensuing action, Whitcomb was waved home, where she beat the throw to the plate, causing a collision with catcher Madison Gilman.  Suddenly, and jarringly, the Titans were ahead 3-2.  A gem of a double play by Ashley Samuels on a lineout and throw to Moore at 3rd to double up Ols ended the inning, but the damage was done.

With one out in the sixth, Gilman was hit by a pitch.  Hunter Glave's liner to third was mishandled by Cosby, and there were runners on 1st and 2nd.  But Samuels would ground to Whitcomb for the force at third base for the second out, then Kendall Thomas grounded out to short, ending the threat, but not the game.

The Patriots breathed life once more in the home half of the seventh when Paige Mitchell hit the only extra-base hit of the game, a double to the left-center field wall with one out.  Allison Tingler's groundout to the pitcher Whitcomb advanced the speedy Mitchell to 3rd with two out and power hitter Sam Moore coming up.  Moore battled, but, in the end, lifted a fly ball to left which was snagged by Cosby left fielder Alex Beyer, and the celebration began for the Titans players and coaches.

"The wheels came off the wagon in the sixth," said Patrick Henry Head Coach Matt Crowder.  "We had to get the top of their order out, and we didn't."

Emma Mitchell finished with four strikeouts, one walk, allowing three runs on four hits.

Patriots in; Atlee, Lee-Davis Fall.....

As the caravan of Hanover County softball fans made their way south down I-295 to Prince George, hopes were high.  Hanoverians were guaranteed one team in the Central Region Softball Finals, and thus, the 2012 State Group AAA Tournament.  Fans hoped two would make the championship round.

In the first semifinal at Prince George High School, as expected, a pitcher's duel ensued between Patrick Henry senior Emma Mitchell and the hottest pitcher in the region the past two weeks, Atlee junior Jessica Holte.

The Raiders came close to scoring off Mitchell in the first inning, getting runners to second and third before Shelby Hill popped out to Mitchell on the mound, ending the threat.  The Patriots went in order in each of the first 3 innings, finally get a base runner in the fourth on an error by Blair Jones on an Allison Tingler grounder to second.  She was stranded there.  Atlee again put two aboard, this time in the fifth, but Cameron Hall grounded into a force out, then Taylor Sutherland grounded out to second to end the threat.

Mackenzie Keyes led off the Atlee sixth with a single, then went to second on a Mattie Fitzgerald sacrifice bunt.  But Mitchell struck out Hill, then induced Holte to fly out to left, and, again, a runner in scoring position was stranded.

Patrick Henry had a tough time getting hits off Holte (she only allowed two), but the second proved to start the game-winning rally in the bottom of sixth, when Ellen Davidson shot one up the middle, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Paige Mitchell.  After a Tingler walk, Sam Moore was hit by a pitch, which some observers believed hit the bottom of the bat rather than her arm/hand.  After an umpire conference, she was awarded first base, loading the bases.

Katie Woody stepped to the plate and hit a fly ball to mid-center field.  Davidson tagged and scurried home, beating the Shelby Hill throw, and the Patriots were up 1-0.  Madison Gilman lined out to short and the Patriots left two aboard.

Atlee's last chance in the seventh went quickly, as Delani Farrar popped out to Moore at third, then Emma Mitchell struck out both Lexi Cumbia and Blair Jones to finish the victory.  Mitchell finished with seven strikeouts, one walk, and allowed three hits, all singles.  Jessica Holte was equally strong, striking out four, walking one, while giving up only two singles.

Atlee finishes 2012 with an 18-6 record and, while they will sorely miss Keyes and Cumbia as they graduate, they will return an impressive seven of nine starters in 2013, including Holte.

Patrick Henry moves to 21-1 and will face Cosby in the Central Region Championship Friday at 5pm at Prince George High School.  The game was moved up from a 7pm start due to the threat of severe weather in the region Friday evening.

-----------------------------

In the nightcap, the Confederate faithful sat on the first base side, replacing the Atlee faithful, hoping for a return to the state tournament won by Lee-Davis one year previous.

Both teams went scoreless through the first four innings, though each time had a runner on base in each 1/2 inning except the Cosby 4th.  Lee-Davis left one runner on base in each of the first three innings, and two in scoring position in the fourth, when Ryleigh Hawker doubled, then Amy Wingfield singled.  Kinsee Stonebreaker, pinch running for Wingfield, stole second, but Taylor Deemer flied out to center and Ashley Berry struck out to end the Confederates' threat.

Lee-Davis again put runners at 2nd and 3rd, this time with nobody out in the fifth.  Cosby starter Chelsea Whitcomb then struck out Lacie Madison, got Casey Price to line out to third on a hard hit ball, and Haleigh Cottrell to line out to right to, again, end the threat.

Cosby would strike first, in the bottom of the fifth, when Lee-Davis ace Lauren McIntyre walked Sam Quinn with one out, bringing up lead-off hitter Meagan Jones, who had already singled twice.  She roped a shot over the head of Price in center field for triple, and Quinn scored.  Next, a suicide squeeze attempt by Ellen Sweat worked as the toss from McIntyre to Cottrell at the plate was mishandled, and Jones scored to make it 2-0.

The Confederates, though, bounced back in the top of the 6th, as Wingfield doubled to center with one out. Taylor Deemer singled to right, and the throw from Cosby's Karie Burgess went to the back stop, allowing Wingfield to slide head first home for the run.  Deemer smartly advanced to third during the brief chaos behind the plate, but was stranded there when Berry's bunt attempt failed and Becca Fields grounded out.

Cosby picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.  With two outs, Burgess walked, then Bridgett Blakeley roped a double to left-center, scoring Burgess for the 3-1 lead.

The Confederates went down in order in the 7th, and although they out hit the Titans 9-6, the runs on the scoreboard mattered the most.

McIntyre threw 71 pitches over six innings, striking out one, while walking two.  Unfortunately for Lee-Davis fans, both of those walks turned into runs.

The Confederates fall a game short of returning to the State Tournament, finishing the season 19-5.  Head Coach Jackie Davis, clearly emotional after the game, noted the monumental contributions of this senior class while acknowledging a good nucleus returning for 2013.

Though they fell a game short of returning to the state stage, the Lee-Davis softball class of 2012 can always hold their heads high, knowing they were part of making history in 2011, and, overcoming many obstacles to again make noise in 2012.

Girls Soccer Season Ends In Semis......

Both Hanover and Atlee entered their Central Region Girls Soccer Semifinals decided underdogs.  By night's end, the scoreboard reflected why.

Hanover's run in the 2012 post-season ended when Deep Run, getting to play on their home field hosting the Regionals, thumped the Hawks 11-0 to advance to the regional final and the State Group AAA Tournament.

Atlee suffered its first and only loss of 2012 Thursday night in the nightcap when they were shut out by Cosby, 5-0.

Though their seasons didn't end the way they hoped, our heartiest congratulations to both the Hawks and Raiders on excellent seasons!

Central Region Playoff Review!

The quarterfinals in Central Region Tournaments in all spring sports are now done. Let's review!

BASEBALL:  The season came to an end in Hanover County Monday when both Atlee and Hanover fell in quarterfinal action at Randolph-Macon College.  Atlee was held to only two hits by Dinwiddie pitcher Michael Bridgeman as the Generals defeated the Raiders 4-0.  Later in the day, Matoaca and Hanover battled back and forth until Matoaca's Michael Birdsong blasted a two-run homer for the winning margin as the Warriors eliminated the Hawks, 5-3.

SOFTBALL: The county's fortunes in softball are totally the opposite, as all three teams that reached Central Region play advanced to the semifinals.  Patrick Henry eliminated Manchester 5-0 Tuesday evening in Ashland, while Atlee traveled to Dinwiddie and defeated the Generals 4-1.  Lee-Davis, in a rematch with Prince George, easily handled the Royals 10-1.  Patrick Henry and Atlee will play in one Region semifinal on Thursday at 5pm at Prince George High School, while Lee-Davis will face Cosby in the other semifinal at approximately 7pm.

BOYS SOCCER:  Both Hanover and Atlee were eliminated in quarterfinal action Tuesday night.  Hanover was shut out on the road at Thomas Dale, 3-0, while Atlee hosted Matoaca in a back-and-forth matchup which saw the Warriors take the lead for good in the 66th minute and cling to a 3-2 winning margin.

GIRLS SOCCER:  Hanover upset Thomas Dale on its home turf Tuesday afternoon to advance to the Region semis.  Shelby Hooe had both Hawk goals in regulation and the game-winning kick during the penalty kick phase after overtime to seal the win.  Meanwhile, unbeaten Atlee breezed past Prince George 9-0.  Atlee will face Cosby, who only has one tie on the season (and no defeats as well) in Thursday's second semifinal at Deep Run High School.  Hanover draws the home team, Deep Run, in the first match at 5:30pm.

BIG Night For Atlee at Capital District Jubilee....

The symmetry is quite stunning.....

Atlee came into both the Capital District softball and baseball semifinals this evening as the #3 seed.  By night's end, the winning number combination for Raider fans would be "5-2".

In softball, Shelby Hill had three hits and scored two runs, while Jessica Holte scattered six hits and struck out three as Atlee defeated Hanover 5-2 to clinch a Central Region Tournament berth and set up a rematch against #1 Lee-Davis in Friday's tournament final.  Hanover scored first on Brooke Throckmorton's RBI single which plated Erica Barrett making it 1-0 Hawks.

Atlee left runners on base in each of the first three innings, but in the third were able to tie the game when Delani Farrar's hard grounder to pitcher Kiandra Mitchum was tough enough to handle to give Cameron Hall time to score from third.

In the fourth, the Raiders took the lead for good as Hall's RBI single scored Hill.  The Hawks stranded a runner at third in their half of the inning.

Atlee broke the game open in the fifth.  A one-out single by Mattie Fitzgerald was followed one out later by Hill's third hit of the game, a single.  Lexi Cumbia then singled, scoring Fitzgerald.  During the next at-bat by Blair Jones, two passed balls allowed both Hill, then Cumbia to score, extending the lead to 5-1.

The Hawks mounted a brief rally in the 7th, scoring one, but the threat ended when Mitchum grounded out to shortstop Taylor Sutherland, and smiles broke out in the first base dugout.

Atlee is now 16-5 on the season (they finished 9-3 in the Capital) and will play Lee-Davis Friday at 5pm for the Capital District Tournament title.

Lee-Davis' bats sprung into action against Glen Allen in the day's first game, scoring five runs in the third inning against fourth-seeded Glen Allen.  A walk to Kelly Heinz was followed by five hits by the next six batters, highlighted by Ryleigh Hawker's two-run double to center.  The Confederates scored four more in the fourth to make it 9-0, then finished the game with three runs in the sixth for a 12-2 victory.  Heinz, Lacie Madison and Casey Price each scored three times, while Haleigh Cottrell drove in three runs.  Lauren McIntyre struck out five in the win.....

------------------------------------

The Raiders baseball squad waited out an hour plus rain delay, then battled evenly with Lee-Davis, requiring an extra inning to gain the upset win.

Two walks by Michael Thomas helped the Raiders score a run in the top of the first.  Thomas' home run a few innings later tied the game at one.

Atlee would score another run, then Lee-Davis plated a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game again.  Atlee stranded a runner at third in their half of the seventh, while the Confederates left two on base in their half.  The Raiders would strike in the eighth.  Mike Harmon's RBI single drove in Andrew Starke.  Chop Pulisic later singled to score Harmon, then Dalton Ruch drove in the final run of the inning with a single.

Lee-Davis got a one-out double by Thomas in the bottom of the eighth, but Luke Bolka got Josh Lam to fly out to center, then struck out Jesse Smith to end the game.

Atlee now faces #1 Hanover in the Capital District final Friday at 6pm and have qualified for the Central Region Tournament, where they will face Dinwiddie in quarterfinal action Monday at 9am at Randolph-Macon College....

-----------------------------------

In soccer action, the Hanover boys won the Capital District crown with a convincing 6-1 victory over Atlee.  The Hawks' girls team easily handled Henrico 7-1 in the second girls semifinal, setting up a championship match against Atlee Friday at 5pm.

NOTES:

---The softball, baseball and girls soccer finals are ALL at Hanover High School on Friday at the above times.
---Patrick Henry's Colonial District Softball Final against Deep Run was postponed due to rain, now set to be played Friday at 7pm.
---In addition to the Dinwiddie/Atlee matchup, the other Central Region Baseball Quarterfinals, to be played at approximately 11am, 1pm and 3pm Monday, are Deep Run/Cosby, Hanover/Matoaca, and James River/Hermitage.

Stormy, Rainy Wednesday at Capital District Jubilee

The games were supposed to start at 5pm.

At 4:25, athletes were ordered inside Hanover High School when thunder and lightning arrived.  Two and one half hours later, the skies finally began to clear.  Though the softball field took the brunt of Mother Nature's wrath, some quick work with the tarp on the baseball diamond allowed officials to at least get one semifinal in tonight at the Capital District Jubilee.

The 5pm game began around 8:20, with the top-seeded Hanover Hawks falling behind early to Glen Allen 1-0 before tying the game in the third and taking the lead for good in the fifth en route to a 3-1 victory and a berth in Friday's District Championship game.

The Hawks will play the winner of the other semifinal between #2 Lee-Davis and #3 Atlee which is now scheduled to be played Thursday at 5pm.

------------------------------

Both District softball semifinals were cancelled, with visible ponds of water in the outfield due to the week's persistent rain activity.  Officials have rescheduled the games for tomorrow, when #1 Lee-Davis will face #4 Glen Allen at 3pm, and #2 Hanover will battle #3 Atlee at 5pm.

------------------------------

One girls soccer semifinal was played tonight as the scheduled 5pm game between Atlee and Glen Allen began around 7:45.  The Raiders led 2-0 at halftime, then scored in droves late in the game for an 8-0 victory.  The other semifinal will take place Thursday at 5pm.  Meanwhile, at Lee-Davis, where weather was less of an issue, both boys soccer semifinals were eventually played, with Atlee and Hanover winning their games to set up a fourth meeting between the teams for the District title Thursday, 5pm, at Lee-Davis.  The game was originally set to be played at Hanover, but, in an effort to ensure games are played Thursday, as more storms are in the forecast, organizers opted to continue to use the second venue to complete the boys soccer tournament.

Sportelli Falls in Tennis Region Semis.....

Lee-Davis' Angela Sportelli's hopes for a Central Region tennis title ended Tuesday when she fell to defending champion Christine Abbott of Midlothian, 6-3, 6-0.  Abbott goes on to face Deep Run's Caroline Mosberg in the finals, scheduled for noon Wednesday at Manchester High School.

PH Girls Survive, Rain Wins Rest of Day....

Ashley Samuels' single in the second inning scored pinch-runner Beth Ford, and Emma Mitchell and the Patrick Henry defense made it stand as the Patriots advanced to the Colonial District Softball Tournament Finals Tuesday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Mills Godwin.  The Eagles loaded the bases in the third inning but could not score and left two stranded in the fifth inning.  Mitchell struck out two of the three batters in the seventh to shut down Godwin for good.

The Patriots advance to play Deep Run, 1-0 winners over J.R. Tucker in the other semifinal, in the tournament championship game Thursday at 7pm, weather permitting, at Mills Godwin.

----------------------------

The Capital District "Jubilee" at Hanover High was postponed 24 hours due to weather conditions after an early afternoon thunderstorm dumped heavy rain on the campus.  The baseball, softball, and soccer games are rescheduled for Wednesday at 5pm.

In Colonial District soccer, the Patrick Henry boys fell short in their quarterfinal match, losing to Douglas Freeman 3-1, finishing their season with a record of 7-8-1.  Meanwhile, the girls team went into a second sudden death before falling to Maggie Walker Governors School, 1-0.  Freshman goalkeeper Berkley Hall had 14 saves for the Patriots, who also finished 2012 with a 7-8-1 record.

Lee-Davis Takes Capital District Title With Comeback Victory

A hard fought Capital District and Hanover County rivalry game had gone according to script after six innings.  Both Lee-Davis and Atlee battled against top pitchers, had some opportunities to score, and, in the end, both had plated a run apiece.

The seventh inning was a rollercoaster ride.

With one out, Cameron Hall blooped a single into right field for the Raiders.  Taylor Sutherland's sacrifice bunt moved Hall to second, and MacKenzie Keyes stepped up and laced a single to left, scoring Hall, and, suddenly, the Raiders led 2-1 on the road, three outs away from tying the Confederates for the District title.

The Confederates, defending state champs, entered their half of the seventh confident they could do what was necessary to extend, or win, the game.  Pinch hitter Victoria Houff led off with a walk.  A Becca Fields bunt attempt was fielded by Atlee starter Jessica Holte, who threw to second for the force out.

Then things went terribly wrong for the Raiders.  Kelly Heinz grounded to second, but Blair Jones' throw to second for the force was low, went underneath the glove of Sutherland, the shortstop, and landed in center field.  The throw back into the infield got away from the Raiders.  Fields moved to third and Heinz to second.  Kinsee Stonebreaker pinch ran for Heinz.

Lacie Madison was the next batter.  She lined a single to right field that went off the leg of Jones, giving Fields time to score the tying run and Stonebreaker time to score the District-winning run.

Atlee finished the regular season at 9-3 in the Capital District, 15-5 overall and win face Hanover Tuesday in the Capital District Tournament semifinals.  Lee-Davis finished 11-1 in the Capital, 17-3 overall and will battle Glen Allen in Tuesday's other semifinal.

Thursday Track, Baseball, Softball......

Congratulations to the Patrick Henry softball team, who captured the Colonial District title Thursday with a victory of J.R. Tucker, completing an undefeated District season.  They go into next week's District Tournament as the top seed, with only one loss on the season.

Hanover Streak Ends At Seven; Atlee Baseball, Softball Win.....

Atlee's offense woke up from a slumber, striking for eight runs in the sixth inning to break open a surprisingly close game to defeat Henrico 11-1 in six innings.  Cameron Hall had three hits and three RBI, while Shelby Hill doubled and tripled, scored once and drove in two runs.  The Raiders move to 8-2 in the Capital District, 14-4 overall, and travel to Highland Springs Tuesday night.

In baseball, Atlee scored in every inning to dispatch Henrico by the same 11-1 count and look to solidify the number three seed in next week's District Tournament Tuesday at Highland Springs.
