UPDATED: 5A State Championship Tournament To Saturday/Sunday....

Patrick Henry softball will have to wait another day to play.

The VHSL, in anticipation of widespread rain and storm activity over Northern Virginia Friday, has postponed all 5A and 6A State Semifinals in spring sports to Saturday 6/14. The Championship games are now Sunday 6/15.

The Patrick Henry/Great Bridge 5A Softball Semifinal is at 12PM on Saturday.

NOTE: The 4A State Baseball Tournament in Lynchburg with Hanover baseball is currently STILL ON for Friday and Saturday.

REGION CHAMPS!: Hanover Baseball, PH Softball Prevail....

Two teams take home Region Championship trophies tonight, as Hanover baseball shut out Grafton 2-0 in the 4A South title game, while Patrick Henry topped Briar Woods 6-2 on the road in the 5A North Softball Championship game.

Grey Lyttle and Matthew Corley combined on a shutout, as Lyttle struck out six over his three innings, then Corley entered to do the rest as the Hawks (19-2) plated runs in the third and fourth innings for the victory. John Gregory's two-out double in the third scored Cayman Richardson, while Jakob Pridemore's single in the fourth scored Elliot Sledd, who singled to start the frame.

Hanover advances to next Friday's State 4A Semifinals at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

Meanwhile, the Patriots opened up a 4-1 lead at Briar Woods, then rode the arm of Candace Whittemore, who completed 21 innings of work in 5A North Region play by allowing just three runs as Patrick Henry moved to 18-1 on the season. Briana Woody had an important two-run double in the top of the seventh to put the game away, as Briar Woods did mount a brief seventh-inning rally, but only scored once.

The Patriots take on Great Bridge, 5A South Region runners-up, next Friday at 7pm at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Fairfax County in the State 5A Semifinals, looking for their second trip to a state final in three years. Patrick Henry lost 3-2 in 10 innings to Cosby in the 2012 State Group AAA Championship Game.

CLINCHED: Hanover Baseball, Patrick Henry Softball Earn State Berths....

County teams go two for three in 5A Region Semifinal action Wednesday night, the games that determine who goes to the State Final Four in individual classifications.

HCS Media Network was live in Ashland as Patrick Henry softball clinched their second trip to State Championship Tournament play in three seasons, defeating Stone Bridge 12-0 in the 5A North Region Semifinals. Ironically, Patrick Henry had to defeat Stone Bridge in Ashburn two years ago in the former State Group AAA Quarterfinal round to earn a berth to the Final Four.

The Patriots scored two runs in the first, again giving an early lead to pitching ace Candace Whittemore, who fanned 11 Bulldogs en route to another shutout. Patrick Henry broke the game open with seven runs in the fourth inning, putting the game on ice when Paige Mitchell, who started as a freshman shortstop on the 2012 state runner-up team, launched a grand slam home run over the right-center field fence in the rain to up the lead to 9-0.

Seven of the nine Patriots in the batting order had two hits or more, with Mitchell driving in five runs and Ashley Samuels going three-for-four on the evening. The Patriots move to 17-1 on the season, and will travel to Ashburn again, this time to face Briar Woods for the 5A North Region Championship on Friday night at 6pm. Both Patrick Henry and Briar Woods advance to the 5A State Tournament June 13th in Burke, Virginia at Lake Braddock Secondary School.

Head Coach Shelby Webb, in just her second season, was excited for her team, but most appreciated their workman-like attitude.

"The finality of it all is finally setting in. Players are thinking 'this is do or die'. They've really grasped the concept of 'this is it'. The thing that makes me most excited is their lack of excitement when they win. It shows you know you're not where you want to be yet."

A win this Friday gives Patrick Henry home field in the State Semifinals on June 13th. Three more victories gives them that elusive State Championship.

Hanover baseball will return to defend their State Group AAA Title after a nail-biting 3-2 win in eight innings at Nansemond River in Suffolk Wednesday night. Derek Casey started for Hanover but got the no-decision as the Hawks saw a 2-1 deficit disappear in the fifth against reliever Hayden Moore. Trevor Denton took over in the sixth, forced a pop out to end a Nansemond River threat with two runners aboard, and pitched the rest of the way for the win.

The Hawks, who play a different style of ball from last year's team that could count on big home runs in key situations, found another way to win as the winning run was scored on a bases loaded walk in the eighth inning. Denton closed out the game, and the trip to states, in the bottom of the frame.

Hanover will face Grafton at home this Friday at 6pm for the 4A South Region Championship. Both teams are in the 4A State Tournament June 13th at Liberty University.

The Atlee girls soccer team saw their season end Wednesday night as they saw their hopes for Conference 11 glory end last week: at the hands of the defending state champions.

Elizabeth Ball, who scored a golden goal for Deep Run's conference win over the Raiders last Friday, scored twice as the Wildcats eliminated Atlee a game short of the 5A State Tournament 3-2. Kate Lewis and Riley Cook scored for the Raiders, Lewis in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead, Cook in the 79th minute for the 3-2 final score. Atlee finishes the season at 17-3.

TUESDAY PLAYOFFS: Four Atlee Teams In Action!

It's Atlee Raider night in the 5A South Region playoffs and the VHSL South Zone Lacrosse Playoffs! Unfortunately, all the games are on the road.

5A South Softball Semifinal: Atlee vs. Prince George, 7pm at Lee-Davis (winner clinches 5A State Championship Tournament berth, advances to 5A South Region Final Thursday in Virginia Beach)

5A South Girls Soccer Quarterfinal: Atlee at Clover Hill, 7:30pm (Clover Hill was pre-determined neutral site for this round...)

South Zone Boys Lacrosse Semifinal: Atlee at Western Albemarle, 6:30pm

South Zone Girls Lacrosse Semifinal: Atlee at Salem, 6pm

Both lacrosse teams can punch a ticket to the first-ever VHSL State Lacrosse Championship Tournament with victories tonight!

FOOTBALL: Zac Hayden No Longer at Lee-Davis....

CBS6 News reported late Monday night that Zac Hayden, Lee-Davis' head football coach for the past four seasons, will not return for the 2014 season in that capacity.

Hayden went 24-18 with the Confederates in his four years at the helm in Mechanicsville, leading Lee-Davis to playoff appearances in both 2011 and 2012, where they lost in the old 5A Central Region semifinals to Atlee and Hanover respectively.

The Confederates finished 5-5 last year, missing the postseason, though as much due to the new 5A South region's decision to split playoff berths among Central and Eastern regions as opposed to allowing the top 16 teams in VHSL rating points to advance to the playoffs.  Had 5A South taken the top 16 teams regardless of location, Lee-Davis would have qualified.

No word yet on any possible successor. We'll have updates as we get them.

MONDAY PLAYOFF FINALS....

BASEBALL:

4A South Region Quarterfinal: Hanover 8, Jamestown 2 (Hawks advance to region semifinal Wednesday at 6pm at Nansemond River in Suffolk. The winner earns a regional final berth and a spot in the 4A State Tournament beginning June 13.)

5A North Region Quarterfinal: George Marshall 7, Patrick Henry 2 (Patriots season comes to an end with a record of 13-9.)

SOFTBALL:

County teams go 2-2 in tonight Region Quarterfinal Rounds, as Patrick Henry and Atlee move on, while Hanover and Lee-Davis see their seasons end.

Patrick Henry jumped to a 5-0 first inning lead and never looked back, pounding Tuscarora 11-1 in a 5A North Quarterfinal. Paige Mitchell had three hits, while senior Kendall Thomas had two hits, including a bases-clearing double in the first inning, on the way to a 5 RBI performance. Patrick Henry hosts Stone Bridge, who upset North Stafford tonight, in a Region Semifinal Wednesday night. The Patriots are 16-1.

Atlee survived a pitchers duel, scratching a run in the 9th inning, then holding off Matoaca for a 1-0 victory in the 5A South Quarterfinals. Casey Barrett singled home Cameron Hall for the game's only run in the top of the 9th for the extra inning victory. The Raiders will face Prince George in tomorrow's 5A South Semifinal, as the Royals knocked off Lee-Davis 3-1, ending the Confederates season at the region level for the third consecutive season. Lee-Davis finishes 16-6.

At Hanover, the Hawks completed two comebacks, but couldn't do it a third time, as they fell to Grafton in a ten-inning thriller 3-2. The game, in 4A South Quarterfinal play, saw Hanover overcome 1-0 and 2-1 deficits, the latter in the 8th inning. The Hawks finish the year at 14-3.
