THE WRAP: Atlee Wins; Others Fall on Hard Fought Friday.....

Here's the quick look at Week 4 in High School Football across the county.....

1) Atlee dispelled the myth of the Henrico Warriors, cruising to a 38-7 halftime lead en route to a 38-14 win on Homecoming night for the Raiders. Atlee moves to 3-1 with TD passes from Reid McCoy to Daniel Glymph and Austin Phipps. Henrico falls to 3-1.

2) Hanover went to war at home against former Capital District foe Highland Springs. PAT's were missed left and right, two fake punts, multiple 4th down conversion attempts and a very controversial call later, the Springers escaped with a 32-26 win.  DJ Johnson threw for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns, running for a 3rd, while Alex Wilson scored the first and final touchdowns of the game.

So here we go!

GAME OF THE WEEK NEXT FRIDAY: Hanover (2-2) at Atlee (3-1), 6:30pm on WHAN, 102.9 FM, 1430 AM and online HERE at HanoverCountySports.net.

3) Lee-Davis ran into a buzzsaw at Varina as the Blue Devils advanced to 4-0 with a 33-7 win. Tim Minor led Varina, including breaking off a 70-yard touchdown run. The Confederates fall to 1-3.

4) Patrick Henry's comeback attempt fell a Hail Mary short at home as the Patriots lost to Mills Godwin 28-20. Bender Vaught became the first Patriot rusher to crack the 100 yard mark on the season. Patrick Henry is still in search of their first win of the season, while Mills Godwin, after losing their home opener, wins their third straight on the road.

COMING UP.....

Randolph-Macon football is on a bye week, so no action on Saturday.

The Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team is participating in the Emory Tournament in Atlanta, Georgia. Women's Soccer goes to Sweet Briar for a 2pm game, while the Men's team plays at Emory & Henry at 3pm.

Many county cross country athletes will participate in the Maymont Cross Country Festival Saturday morning in Richmond.

Taylor Loomis, Ally Ritchie, and the R-MC field hockey team are home, hosting Bridgewater at 1pm.

THE WRAP: Tons of Volleyball Action; JV Football....

Here's what you need to know from Thursday!

1) GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Lee-Davis went the to Birdcage and picked up a 3-0 over Hanover that was much closer than that score indicates. An excellent game from libero Rianna Riccardi, the lefty sophomore whose serve was the perfect diversion for the Confederates' offense. She served L-D into a comfortable lead in set 1. Fellow sophomore Kendyll Brown had some excellent kills and blocks, giving the CFeds more help in the middle.  Lee-Davis goes to 9-4, while Hanover drops to 6-6. It was the Hawks' third consecutive 3-0 loss, but consider the competition: Atlee, Glen Allen, and now Lee-Davis.

Put Atlee at 10-1 after a 3-0 sweep tonight against Highland Springs. Speaking of the middle, Molly Jarvis continues her impressive play with six kills to go with five aces.  The Raiders host Henrico Tuesday before going to Lee-Davis for their first showdown of 2013 a week from tonight.

Deep Run swept Patrick Henry tonight in Ashland, 3-0, by scores of 25-17, 18, and 17. Amber Lee led the Patriots (4-5) with 10 kills.....

2) BOYS VOLLEYBALL: In an epic five-setter, Lee-Davis held serve at home and knocked off Hanover 3-2, with the tiebreaker 15-12. Meanwhile, Patrick Henry's first loss since the Virginia Volleyball Showcase Labor Day Weekend came tonight at Deep Run, falling in three sets.

3) GOLF: In the inaugural Conference 16 Tournament at Hanover Country Club, Patrick Henry shot a 330 to finish 4th overall.  Jackson Clarke and Zack Napier each qualified individually for the 2013 Class 5A North Region Tournament, each shooting a nine-over par 80.

4) JV FOOTBALL: Very, very impressive victory for the Lee-Davis Confederates, 12-0 over Varina tonight. On the road, Atlee knocks off Henrico by a 24-14 count.

COMING FRIDAY:

FOOTBALL!  Our Game of the Week on WHAN Radio (102.9 FM/1430 AM) features a decade-old, former Capital District rivalry as Hanover welcomes in Highland Springs. Both teams are 2-1 and look for a win to help solidify playoff position in Class 4A and 5A respectively. Hanover won the last time these two teams met on Chamberlayne Road, 10-7, and last year's battle went down to the final play of the game when Highland Springs QB D.J. Johnson found the left front corner of the end zone on an eight-yard run with no time remaining to complete an 18-point 4th quarter comeback to win, 24-21.

ALSO: It's Homecoming at #Atlee, and the opponent is a surprising 3-0. The Henrico Warriors and quarterback Malik White come to the Rage Cage to try to match Reid McCoy and company yard for yard, point for point. Henrico's victories are all over winless teams, so this is a big step up in competition for them, but the Raiders are one of the region's most banged up teams, missing Austin Cannon, Booth Watson and Ross Gardner due to injuries.

Patrick Henry will host Mills Godwin (2-1) in hopes of not going 0-for-September and give Jonathan Clark his first varsity head coaching victory. The Eagles have won two straight on the road after losing their opener at home to Monacan.

Lee-Davis, coming off their Tomato Bowl win and Blake Stattelman's 321-yard rushing night, must go to Varina, who are coming off their first win over Hermitage in five years. The 3-0 Blue Devils are near the top of Class 6A South, while, at 1-2, Lee-Davis is trying to find victories to claw back into the playoff race in Class 5A South.

THE WRAP: #LDFH to 8-0, PH Boys, Atlee Girls Continue Volleyball Success....

Here's a review of the night that was Tuesday across Hanover County....

1) FIELD HOCKEY: Lee-Davis improved their torrid start to an 8-0 mark, scoring all of their goals in the first half en route to a 3-1 win over Glen Allen.  Lauren Wolfgang had two more goals for the Confederates, one was assisted by Madison Doss, who scored their final goal just 85 seconds before halftime.  The Jaguars got on the board in the second half, but came no closer than two.

2) VOLLEYBALL: Patrick Henry's boys team scored an important win at home over Mills Godwin in a game heard live on HCS Media Network. Sam Boyd's 38 assists set up Lucas Pienkowski, Austin Pace and Cowles McCray with important kills as the Patriots swept the Eagles, 25-18, 27-25, 25-20, to move to 8-4.
The Hanover boys survived a marathon versus Glen Allen, winning the tiebreaking fifth set 18-16, and the Lee-Davis boys were victorious, sweeping Highland Springs on the Springers' home court.

In girls' action, Atlee moved to 9-1 with a sweep of Varina, while Lee-Davis held serve at home, sweeping Highland Springs. Hanover fell to Glen Allen in three sets in a battle of former Capital District, and now Conference 20, foes.

3) WOMEN'S SOCCER: Randolph-Macon traveled to Mary Washington, but fell by a 4-2 count. The Jackets now have a record of 3-5.

COMING UP WEDNESDAY:

1) CROSS COUNTRY: Patrick Henry meets J.R. Tucker and Hermitage on the road Wednesday afternoon, while Atlee, Hanover, and Lee-Davis all head to a "Capital District" meet at Pole Green Park.

2) FIELD HOCKEY: All eyes will be on Atlee at 5pm as Hanover comes in to face the Raiders, who are coming off a shocking loss to Henrico Monday in penalty strokes. Patrick Henry looks for their fifth win of the year at home against Maggie Walker Governors School while the unbeaten Lee-Davis Confederates go for 9-0 at Varina.

3) WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Randolph-Macon, winners of three straight ODAC matches, look to extend that streak in Crenshaw Gymnasium Wednesday night when Bridgewater comes to Ashland for a 7pm match.

THE WRAP: L-D Unbeaten; Atlee Upset.....

Field Hockey action in every corner of the county Monday night with some interesting results.

The shocker of the night was at Atlee, where the Raiders (6-3) were upset by Henrico 3-2 in penalty strokes after a scoreless regulation and overtime. Numa Rehmani had 12 saves for the Raiders, who must regroup and be ready to face Hanover at home Wednesday at 5pm.

The Hawks dispensed of Varina 3-0, while Patrick Henry shut out J.R. Tucker on the road 4-0.

Meanwhile, Lee-Davis celebrated Senior Night with a 10-0 defeat of Highland Springs.  Cameron Gibson had four goals and Madison Angus and Lauren Wolfgang each tallied one.  The Confederates have a huge match-up tonight at Glen Allen.

THE WRAP: College Stop Saturday!

Through the monsoon went HCS to visit two Hanover County freshmen who have already made their mark in football and women's volleyball.

1) Sam Rogers played often, at tailback and on special teams as Virginia Tech won the first triple overtime game in Lane Stadium history, 29-21 over Marshall. 33 plays for Rogers by our count, most blocking, but QB Logan Thomas missed a wide open Rogers on a key fourth quarter pass. The Hokies, behind for over half of the game, finally tied things up with 3:09 to go on a TD pass from Thomas that was tipped before being caught in the end zone by Willie Byrn.

Each team failed to score in the first two overtimes as the rain poured and the winds swirled. Thomas finally took the game into his hands, scoring a touchdown and the mandatory 2-point conversion in the third overtime. The Tech defense, stalwarts in the second half while the offense sputtered, stopped the Thundering Herd one last time to seal the victory.

2) We visited 89-year old Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Virginia next to see freshman Karlie Suber and the Cavaliers battle in-state foe William & Mary. The Tribe won the first set 26-24 before the Wahoos took the next three sets to win in four to advance to 7-5. Suber played in the first two sets and had six digs.

Virginia gets ready for ACC play, having to travel to Duke and Wake Forest before returning to Charlottesville October 11th and 12th.  Karlie is one of four freshmen active on the roster and getting a lot of playing time, and thus, key growth experience in weekend tourneys as the Cavs prep for the ACC.

3) Deshaun Rogers had two kick returns for 27 yards total and a solo tackle as Randolph-Macon outlasted Bethany (WV) College Saturday 36-28. Will McGhee had a monster game, rushing 42 times for 296 yards to lead the Jackets, now 2-1, who have a bye next week before starting ODAC play at home October 5th.

Add in Donte Haynesworth's work on defense with Norfolk State, and the Class of 2013 is already making its mark at the next level, with many other athletes waiting in the wings come winter and spring.

THE WRAP: Friday Night Football, Week 3

No one's unbeaten in football anymore.....and a monster night for a running back. Here's the headlines from September 20th:

1) The Blake Stattelman Show--The junior tailback rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns....in the FIRST HALF!  He returned to add 117 more yards and a final touchdown run to end the night with 42 carries, 321 yards, and 4 TD's, Player of the Week candidate without a doubt, as Lee-Davis beat Patrick Henry 34-14 in the 55th Tomato Bowl.  It's the Confederates' 3rd straight Tomato Bowl victory, as well as their 3rd straight win in Ashland dating back to 2009.

2) PH Finally Scores, Now What?--Their defense, again, wore down, because the offense couldn't sustain drives. Tyler Phelps was quite rusty in his return, going 2-of-13 for 11 yards, though he had two long pass attempts to Chesdin Harrington right on the money before they were knocked away by Lee-Davis defenders in one-on-one jump ball situations. The Patriots are 0-3, and 2-1 Mills Godwin comes calling next Friday. PH desperately needs #1's to emerge: a number one tailback, a number one receiver, a number one shutdown defender who leads the charge a la Jeff Thompson, Sam Smith and Adrian Cavanaugh have over the past decade. That warrior-type leader hasn't emerged for the PH defense...yet.

3) Hanover, Atlee Go Down on the Road: Hanover jumped to a 13-0 lead, then sputtered the rest of the way, while Hopewell jumped back into the game with a great 3rd quarter, taking the lead for good late and holding on for a 21-19 win. The Hawks are 2-1 and return home to facing a rested 2-1 Highland Springs team, who had a bye this week.  Highland Springs at Hanover is our Game of the Week on 102.9 FM WHAN Radio and here at HanoverCountySports.net next Friday!

Atlee discovered they didn't have the only defense in the area making huge improvements over last year. The Douglas Freeman defense held Atlee to just two touchdowns as the Rebels pulled away with a 24-14 win to go to 3-0 for the first time since the 1990's, a minimum of 15 years....the Raiders come back home next Friday to face 3-0 Henrico, whose offense can strike quickly.  Suddenly, another tough test for a Raiders squad whose offense has regressed the last two weeks after that 70-point performance on opening night.

The Raiders were without lineman Austin Cannon and wideouts Ross Gardner and Booth Watson, all out due to injuries. They probably won't be available for the Henrico game either, making it all the more important for McCoy, Dandridge, Stubbs, Carey, etc to step up their games individually if the Raiders want to be 3-1 going into Hanover week.

4) Congratulations to Travis Phillips, now a freshman at East Carolina, and Shania Williams, a Patrick Henry senior, as they received their state championship rings tonight in a pregame ceremony at the Tomato Bowl!  Phillips won the 110-meter hurdle title, Williams the women's shot put title, last spring.  Travis sent us a shot of his new hardware....

1) Sam Rogers and Virginia Tech welcome Marshall at 12noon at Lane Stadium, while Karlie Suber helps the UVa Women's Volleyball team in a weekend tourney in Charlottesville.  They'll play William & Mary at 7pm. @Hanoversports plans to be at both events on Saturday, as we work on a series for the Hanover Herald-Progress on multiple county freshmen already making their mark on the college level.

THE WRAP: THURSDAY'S RESULTS...

Here are Thursday's Highlights....

FIELD HOCKEY: Sophomore Sydney Baldwin had a penalty stroke goal and an assist to pace Atlee to a 3-2 win at Patrick Henry, advancing the Raiders' record to 6-2. Brooke Flexon and Ashley Samuels tallied for the Patriots, who fell to 3-4.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: It will go down as an Atlee 3-0 sweep of Hanover in the record books by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-11, but the Hawks performance at home was better than the score reflects. They led set one 13-12 before Atlee went on a 13-3 run to win it. The Raiders were more decisive in the final two sets, taking advantage of several unforced Hanover errors. Kudos to Lauren Stanford, in at libero for the injured Melanie Snyder, who contributed 10 digs, 4 assists and 3 aces. Maddie French and Kylah Blackmore each had 12 digs as Atlee improved to 8-1.  For the Hawks (6-4), Rebecca Hoover had 12 digs, 3 kills and an ace while Leila Haynesworth at 7 kills, 2 aces and 5 digs...

Lee-Davis had a sweep victory of their own tonight over Varina, as Chelsea Matthews helped herself to 6 kills and 5 digs while Anna Soroka added 15 assists. the Confederates move to 7-4...and in a titanic battle to a five-set tiebreaker, Patrick Henry outlasted Hermitage, 25-11, 22-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-13. Laura Williams' 35 assists and 5 kills paced the Patriots (4-3).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: A five-set showdown for Atlee and Hanover, and, as in the girls match, the visitors were victorious. Hanover (3-2) knocks off Atlee (4-7) 25-15, 25-22, 25-27, 17-25, 15-12. Giles Vanhuss paced Hanover with 33 assists and 10 blocks, while Drew Hazelgrove had 11 kills, 10 digs, and 5 aces. Eric Rohr led Atlee with 10 digs, 9 kills and 6 aces, while Jeremy Eye had 16 kills on the night, as did Hanover's John Atwood.

Life was much easier for Patrick Henry, as they swept Hermitage 25-19, 25-20, 25-15. Will Burch led the Patriots (6-4) with 2 kills and 3 digs while Wood McIlhenny had 8 kills.

JV FOOTBALL FINALS: Atlee 17, Douglas Freeman 14; Hopewell 34, Hanover 31; Patrick Henry knocks off Lee-Davis 29-20....

GOLF: Atlee takes a victory at Queensfield today, defeating Hanover and host Lee-Davis. The Raiders shot a 161, the Hawks a 174, and the Confederates a 179. Leaders for each team were Phillip Sening, the medalist at 37, Ward Wilkinson for Hanover at 41 and Austin Diehr for L-D with a 42.

It's Football!!

--The 55th Tomato Bowl sees Lee-Davis at Patrick Henry, two teams needing a victory to avoid starting 0-3.  LIVE coverage of the Tomato Bowl begins at 6:30pm on WHAN Radio, 102.9 FM, and online at the link at the top of this page!
--Atlee travels for the first time this year, and they get Douglas Freeman, who they lost to 49-48 on a touchdown with 3 seconds left. Both teams are 2-0 and a huge crowd is expected at William Long Stadium. Get there early for good parking.
--Hanover travels down I-295 to the site of their 2012 Division 5 Regional Championship, rematching against Hopewell. The Blue Devils lost to Powhatan last week while Hanover is 2-0, coming off victories against Patrick Henry and JR Tucker. Hopewell will be a step up in competition before the Hawks host Highland Springs next Friday.

THE WRAP: WEDNESDAY HEADLINES....

Here's what's happening as Wednesday comes to an end....

1) Atlee field hockey got back on track tonight with a convincing 7-1 win over Highland Springs. The Raiders improve their record to 5-2 overall and go to Patrick Henry on Thursday afternoon.

2) Lee-Davis boys volleyball handled Henrico on the road Wednesday evening in three sets, 25-14, 25-18, 25-19. Carson Caudell had 7 kills, 5 digs and 3 aces while Jordan Lafferty had 14 kills and 3 aces.

3) A new photo gallery of tonight's L-D/Henrico volleyball game is posted now on our Facebook page!

COMING UP....

1) The Atlantic 10 Conference is expected to announce Thursday they will begin hosting their Women's Basketball Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. The press conference is scheduled for 1pm in downtown Richmond, and HCS Media Network will be there for live coverage via Twitter and more.

The Hanover baseball state championship team of 2013 returned to the Hawks Nest Friday night to receive their state title rings in a halftime ceremony during the Hawks' football home opener last night.

FOOTBALL WEEK ONE: Hawks, Raiders Storm To Victory....

The defending regional champions picked up quite nicely with life after Sam Rogers and Company....

The Hawks scored on their opening possession and never allowed a point, defeating Patrick Henry 22-0 in Ashland on opening night, Hanover's eight consecutive victory over the Patriots.

New quarterback Korbin Bordonie went 11-of-20 for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 9-yard strike to Brennan Gary.

Chesdin Harrington, subbing for the injured Tyler Phelps at quarterback for PH, completed his first seven passes, but didn't complete a pass in the second half. Phelps was out with a sprained ankle and is expected to return next week at Atlee.

Brooks Coombs was the star of the game, rushing 19 times for 134 yards and an insurance touchdown, the only score of the second half.

Meanwhile, the Atlee Raiders picked up right where they left off offensively, as a new cast emerged in a 70-14 rout of Deep Run. It was 49-7 by halftime.  The game was over almost before it started.

Now Patrick Henry must travel to face and find an answer for Atlee next Friday night.  That's our "Game of the Week" on WHAN, 102.9 FM, 1430 AM and here at HanoverCountySports.net.

In Stafford tonight, Lee-Davis' 4th quarter comeback effort fell a touchdown short as Mountain View held on for a 28-21 victory in the opener for the Confederates......

HCS Media Network Joins Forces With American Heart Association for Richmond Heart Walk!

Many of you know that, on April 8th of this year, Rob Witham, head of operations for HCS Media Network (and better known as the "@hanoversports guy"), suffered a heart attack while napping at home.

Through the incredible work of Henrico EMT's and the staff at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, an emergency stent procedure was performed on a 100 percent blockage of the entrance to his aorta. Two days later, amazingly, he was home from the hospital.

We've spent the summer rehabilitating, getting ready to make 2013-14 our best year of sports coverage yet. And now, we're ready to give back to those who helped us, in the hopes that others will never have to face the same challenge.

HCS MEDIA NETWORK (including @hanoversports, @henricosports, @cfieldsports) is proud to announce we will have a team participating in the 2013 Richmond Heart Walk, taking place Saturday September 28th on Brown's Island!

We need your help!  You can help either by becoming a member of our walking team or by donating to our team!

WEDNESDAY: Golfing in the Rain, Field Hockey Played and Postponed....

The wet Wednesday weather didn't stop county golfers from teeing it up at the County Quad at Hanover Country Club....

Atlee nipped Hanover by three strokes, 157-160, with Patrick Henry close behind at 163. Lee-Davis struggled and finished fourth at 187.

A good day for both Hanover freshman Ward Wilkinson and Lee-Davis' Austin Diehr, both shooting 36 to be co-medalists for the day.

Today's field hockey home opener for Atlee against Deep Run fell victim to the weather. It will be rescheduled for Tuesday September 10th.

Meanwhile Hanover squared its early season record at 1-1 with a 3-1 victory over Monacan, a fellow member of the new Conference 20 in Class 4A South.

MONDAY NEWS: Field Hockey Starts, NBC12 and WHAN Radio Join Forces for High School Football Fridays!

The 2013 Field Hockey season officially got underway Monday with three county teams facing early road tests.

The Atlee Raiders, looking to rebound from a 10-7 season, fell behind early at Mills Godwin, but tied the match with 14:52 to go on a goal from Hayley Anna and took the lead once and for all with 3:10 to go on a goal from Jasmine Zollar as Atlee held on for a 2-1 victory.

Meanwhile, Hanover started on the road against perennial power Midlothian, falling 3-1 in a hard-fought match. Patrick Henry traveled to Azalea Avenue and came away with a season opening 2-1 win over Henrico. Two of three victories for Hanover County to open 2013.

Lee-Davis looks for a measure of revenge Tuesday afternoon when they open their season hosting Douglas Freeman, the team that eliminated their from last year's Central Region tournament, at 5pm. We will LIVE tweet from the L-D/Freeman showdown!

FOOTBALL: Randolph-Macon Handles North Carolina Wesleyan in Lone Scrimmage

15 days before they play for real, the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets hit Day Field to finally play some football against someone other than themselves.

North Carolina Wesleyan made the two-hour trip north from Rocky Mount, NC. In the end, the Yellow Jackets took a 36-13 win, showed great flashes and typical August mistakes, and many new players got their first taste of game action in Ashland.

Returning QB Zac Naccarato looked very sharp in his nearly two quarters of work. The erratic throwing that beset him at times in 2012 was nowhere to be found. Backup Bubby Morgan led the Jackets on their final drive of the first half, which stalled just yards from paydirt.  A short field goal gave the Jackets a 24-7 halftime edge en route to a 36-13 win.

As well as Naccarato, a good night for sophomore tailback from Manassas Park High School, who scored the game's first touchdown and rushed well in typical Yellow Jacket "north-south" fashion. Returning leader rusher Will McGhee was held out of the scrimmage. McGhee is not injured; the coaching staff felt there was much risk and little reward to put perhaps their top returning offensive threat from 2012 in a scrimmage.

Byrd took advantage of that decision with a powerful performance.

The Jackets, picked to finish second in the 2013 ODAC race, open the season at home September 7th looking to avenge a loss to open 2012 to Johns Hopkins.

ALERT: Sam Rogers To Start As Walk-On Freshman for Hokies (with commentary)

He was receiving nicknames from the coaching staff by last week.

Then his name ascended to 2nd string at fullback on the depth chart.

Today, the ascension was completed.

Sam Rogers, the most decorated football player in the first decade of history at Hanover High School, was announced late Tuesday afternoon as the starting fullback for Virginia Tech when the Hokies open their 2013 season next Saturday in Atlanta against two-time defending National Champion Alabama in Atlanta.

Remember that Rogers was a walk-on freshman when he arrived at Blacksburg.  He received two FCS scholarship offers, but in a conversation with HCS last December, he spoke at length about his desire to play college football at the highest level, even if that meant doing it the hard way.

Here's a portion of the profile of Rogers that ran in the Herald-Progress at the end of 2012.

"I don't want to settle for something less than that. I'm pretty sure it'll be at an FBS or FCS school. I know I can do it, I have confidence in myself and in my abilities, thanks to the wonderful influences I've had in my life."

Rogers has invited walk-on opportunities at both the University of Virginia and at Virginia Tech, and there will undoubtedly be more. But, lest you forget, while Rogers sells himself to colleges to find the right fit, he's also looking for the right coach.

"I'm looking for a coach that trusts me and trusts what I can do. At this point, you can't be picky if you're not the highest recruit. But I'm confident in what I can do on the field, and I'm looking for a staff that wants to win."

Rogers, though impressed with Mike London and UVA, felt the right choice was with Frank and Shane Beamer at Virginia Tech.  The coaches have described him as working the hardest, and knowing the playbook better than anyone.

We are surprised by neither.

COMMENTARY:  I have been watching high school football for over 30 years, and have called play-by-play on WHAN Radio Friday nights, now going into my 12th season.

A few players have shown "warrior-like" qualities from time to time.  Sam Smith, Jeff Thompson, and Adrian Cavanaugh of Patrick Henry come to mind.  

But no player has received the moniker of "warrior" on a regular basis from me, save one: Sam Rogers.

In 2011, he suffers an elbow injury mid-season that would shut the regular 16 year-old down for the year. He comes back, wears a protective brace, and, knowing he can't play quarterback, helps his team win the Central Region and go to the state semis playing H-Back and his showing his usual leadership on defense.

In 2012, he suffers a freak finger injury in practice, then returns to, again, lead the Hawks to the regional crown, and, appropriately, in the 2012 state semis against Stone Bridge, his last high school pass was a 4th and 23 completion of 27 yards to Donte Haynesworth for a touchdown in a comeback that fell short only because the clock ran out before Rogers could get the ball back in his hand.

I had never sought out a player after a game to compliment them after a broadcast....until that night.  I found Sam, leaving the Hanover field for the final time in his uniform, by the Hawks statue, and told him he was a warrior.

He's proved it again.

Sam is making Hanover High School and Hanover County proud, as did many players before him (Jock Jones, Damien Woody, Erron Kinney to name just a few...).  There are others from the Class of 2013 doing the same thing even now.

But this day we salute the warrior, Sam Rogers.  Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to set my DVR for August 31st at 5:30pm.  :)

GRAL Swimming Champs This Weekend; Fall Sports Start Monday!

Eleven Hanover County swimming clubs sent a total of 504 swimmers to the Greater Richmond Aquatic League's annual CHAMPS post-season competition, being held this weekend for the first time at the new Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Chesterfield.

8-and-under competition was held Friday night. Today is competition for 9 to 12 year olds. Sunday wraps up the tournament with competitions for 13-to-18 year olds.

The day has arrived!  Monday August 5th will begin, in earnest, the 2013-14 high school sports seasons, as two county football teams will begin practice and countless others will come to team tryouts and first-day practices.  Golf teams have already begun preparation for their season, which begins in ten days when Patrick Henry welcomes Orange for their first-ever meeting at Hanover Country Club.

We'll be covering and previewing every team from every sport at all four schools throughout August here on our web site, and in the sports section of the Hanover Herald-Progress each week.

TUESDAY REVIEW: Post 175 gets surprise opponent; Atlee Softball Wins State Title!

Mechanicsville Post 175 will not have their much-anticipated fifth game against West End Post 361 when the District 11 American Legion Tournament finals begin Wednesday night at LC Bird High School in Chester.

That's because Lakeside Post 125, a team that looked to be on life support just a week ago, upset #2 seeded West End 6-3 Tuesday night to advance to the tourney finals.  This prevents a rematch of the 2012 tourney final, when Post 175 beat Post 361 to finish an unbeaten schedule in District 11 both in the regular season and tournament.

Mechanicsville swept Lakeside in their three meetings in the regular season, coming from behind to win at Douglas Freeman July 8th, then winning both ends of a doubleheader by double-digit margins on July 15th.

In the double-elimination format, Lakeside will have to beat Mechanicsville twice to win the tourney, which determines the team that represents District 11 in the American Legion State Tournament, which is scheduled to begin Monday in Williamsburg.

BREAKING: Stoudt Named Coach at Hanover

Derek Stoudt, who has spent the past five seasons as the offensive line coach for Hanover, and has served as co-offensive coordinator, has been elevated to the head coaching position for the Hawks as the beginning of practice for the 2013 season is now just 18 days away.

Stoudt, entering his sixth season on staff for the Hawks, replaces Josh Just, who resigned in June to take over as Activities Director for the school, replacing the now-retired Robert Stratton.

Hanover is the two-time defending Division 5 Regional Champions, but now are in the new "4A" state classification as VHSL realignment officially begins this school year.

ALERT: Mechanicsville Post 175 win streak now 16, tie for District title clinched....

Mechanicsville Post 175 made very quick work of Lakeside Post 125, who came closest a couple of weeks ago to ending Post 175's current 16-game winning streak, taking both ends of a doubleheader Monday night at Atlee, 11-1 and 14-3.

Taylor Crowe and Michael Thomas toed the rubber for Post 175 pitching well, allowing coach Eddie Gates to save the other arms for the doubleheader finale tomorrow against Colonial Heights at Atlee High School. First pitch of game 1 is at 5:30.

Post 175 needs one win Tuesday to officially clinch the District 11 regular season title for the 2nd year in a row. Mechanicsville is 17-2.

ALERT: Mechanicsville Post 175 wins 14th straight!

After having two doubleheaders rained out Friday and Saturday, Mechanicsville Post 175 finally got back to action Sunday afternoon and wasted no time extending its winning streak to 14 with a 6-1 victory over South Richmond Post 137 at Atlee High School.

Combined with their 13-3 win Thursday over West End Post 361, Post 175 now has 2-1 series wins over the only two teams to beat them so far this season.

Luke Bolka and Bryant Lowry each homered for Mechanicsville, who improved to 15-2. In order to clinch the District 11 regular season title, they must take care of making up the two doubleheaders.  They'll face Lakeside Post 125 Monday and Colonial Heights Post 284P Tuesday, both days at 5:30 at Atlee High.  Winning three of the four games will ensure the district title and the top seed in next week's District Tournament.

BASEBALL: Mechanicsville Post 175 with surprising rout of West End Post 361

Michael Thomas' pitching kept West End Post 361 from mounting big innings, while Mechanicsville Post 175 finally turned LOB's into runs in the middle innings to win 13-3 in a #1 vs. #2 District 11 showdown tonight at Deep Run High School.

Thomas struck out 11, though 2 of those ended in wild pitches with 361 batters reaching base.

Dalton Ruch opened the game with a solo home run to left in the first, but Will Black's RBI groundout into a double play plated Brandon Stein to tie the game after two.

175 left two more on base in the third (five total in the first four innings), and 361 took advantage of a wild pitch and a mental lapse to take the lead in the fourth when John Lloyd walked, then, advanced to second after a double play and scored from second when a Thomas wild pitch was retrieved in an aloof manner by catch Mitch Keeler for a 2-1 Post 361 lead.

It was the fifth inning where Post 175 took control, loading the bases five times, scoring three runs to retake the lead, using five singles and a walk to generate the runs.  And yes, they left two more stranded.

In the sixth, Michael Thomas nearly took the head off of tonight's first base coach, Evan Swecker, on a line shot foul down the first base line. On the next pitch, Thomas roped a home run down the right field line for a 6-3 advantage.

In the seventh, they put it away, with a seven-run outburst. Five singles, two hit batsmen, and walk and a bases-clearing double by Bryant Lowry made it 13-3.

Thomas earned strikeouts #10 and #11 on Chad Shaw and Cole Hyman to end the game.

Post 361 drops to 15-4, but firmly in the #2 seed in District 11 if the season ended today. Post 175 improves to 14-2, but still must play five games in three days, including doubleheaders Friday (home to Post 125) and Saturday (at Colonial Heights), so a regular season championship is still far away.

But it will help immensely that head coach Eddie Gates never had to go to the bullpen, saving the rest of his pitching depth for the grueling weekend stretch still to come.

1) A "dot org" domain is for non-profit organizations. HCS Media is beginning to partner with businesses and companies in promotional and advertising endeavors which will not only benefit them and our company, but students that we cover, as soon as we will unveil plans for the "HCS Media Scholarship Foundation".  Thus, to align our name with our stated objectives, we changed from .org to .net.

2) This matches the Hanover site name with the name of our new sister site for Henrico coverage, HenricoCountySports.net.

UPDATES: Rockville Softball, Football Schedules 2013

SOFTBALL: The Rockville 8U team will share the Babe Ruth state championship with New Kent, as the teams were unable to agree on a makeup date for their championship game which was postponed Sunday due to a storm in Stafford County.  Both teams advance to the Southeast Regional Tournament, which begins on Thursday July 18th and will be held this year at RF&P Park in Glen Allen.

ROCKVILLE SOFTBALL WINS MULTIPLE STATE TITLES!!!

On a hot, muggy Sunday afternoon in Stafford County, at two different locations, Rockville softball made itself known to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Going unbeaten, the 16U team came from behind to defeat New Kent 8-6 to win the Babe Ruth State Championship. New Kent played small ball early, taking advantage of Rockville lapses to take a 4-1 lead in the first inning.  But Rockville fought back, taking the lead in the 3rd 6-4.

New Kent wasn't done, plating two more to tie the game, but Anna Wells scored the would-be championship run and Rockville added one more in the 6th for insurance. Olivia Harris shut down the New Kent offense when it mattered most and got a strikeout to finish the game and clinch the title.

Rockville advances to the Babe Ruth Southeast Regionals beginning July 18th at RF&P Park at Glen Allen.

The 10U team from Rockville will be joining 16U at the Southeast Regionals and will, too, wear the moniker of "State Champions". In a contest closer than the final score indicated, Rockville defeated Summit Point 7-1 for the state crown. Pitcher Jaime Hughes had an inside-the-park home run in the second inning to open the scoring and kept the Tsunami from scoring until there were two outs in the final inning.  She, too, got a strikeout to clinch the championship.

The 8U team also qualified for the Southeast Regionals by advancing to their State Championship game, defeating Stafford, the host team, in the semifinals. The 8U championship game versus Manassas was postponed this evening due to storms in Northern Virginia.

American Legion: Post 175 wins fifth straight; improves to 6-2.....

After a slow start and many bouts with Mother Nature, Mechanicsville Post 175 has found a groove.

They finished a busy weekend of four games in under 48 hours with a 15-8, rain-shortened victory Sunday evening at Powhatan Post 201. The win was the fifth straight for Post 175, moving their record to 6-2.

Post 201 kept it close, matching Post 175's three-run first inning with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. But 175 kept the offense going, scoring one each in the second and third, then taking advantage of five walks by 201 reliever NaJee Jones, scoring six runs, the big hit being a double down the left field line by Cody Powers which drove in two of the six.

Colin Lawless of Post 201 cut the 175 lead in half in the bottom of the fourth when he launched a grand slam home run over the right field fence off reliever Patrick Holler (starter Evan Swecker exited the game after just one inning after suffering an unknown injury).

Post 175 responded with power of its own, as Michael Thomas launched a two-run shot deep over the right field fence, part of a three-run fifth to make the score 14-7.

The rain, which had been held at bay by a slow moving system just a few miles west of the stadium for over two hours, finally began to fall at Baltimore Field in the top of the sixth, and the umpires called the game after 5 1/2 innings with Post 175 ahead 15-8.

HOOPS: Huber Coming Home....

HanoverCountySports can confirm that Taylor Huber, the all-time leading scorer in Patrick Henry girls basketball history, has transferred from Utah Valley University to Randolph-Macon College.

Huber, who appeared in 29 games last season for the Division I Wolverines, averaging 5.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per contest, is working this season with other team members at the Randolph-Macon Elite Girls Basketball Camp at the Brock Center.

At the event, Yellow Jackets head coach Carroll LaHaye confirmed Huber will suit up for R-MC this coming season, reuniting with former Patrick Henry teammate Katie Anderson, the 2012-13 ODAC Rookie of the Year.

Huber will have two seasons of eligibility remaining for the Yellow Jackets.

BREAKING: HAWKS WIN STATE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Derek Casey did his part, striking out ten and limiting Great Bridge to just one run in the six innings he was allowed to pitch due to VHSL pitching guidelines.

Head Coach Charlie Dragum handed the ball to freshman Hayden Moore to get the job done in the 7th, and he did, retiring Great Bridge in order to clinch the first-ever state baseball championships for the #HawkGreen as Hanover wins 2-1 in Chantilly.

It wasn't without a load of suspense, as Hanover entered the sixth down 1-0, but scored two in the frame to take the lead for good.  They lost a chance at an insurance run when Chris Gilliam was caught trying to steal third for the second out, as the next batter doubled, which would've scored Gilliam.

The final out was contentious, too, as the Great Bridge batter skied a Moore fastball over the left field fence, but just barely in foul territory.  His next time hitting the ball, it was a fly to right easily caught by Gilliam to begin the Hanover celebration.

The Hawks avenge their loss in the 2009 state title game to Menchville, also of the Eastern Region, and finish 2013 at 23-4, and most importantly, as STATE CHAMPIONS.

Congratulations, Hawks!!!

1) Go south on Route 301, take I-295 West (Charlottesville)
2) Take Exit 43A on left for I-95 North, go 67 miles...
3) Take Exit 152B for Route 234 North (Dumfries Road), go 14 miles
4) Turn right on Route 294 East (Prince William Parkway), go 2 miles
5) Prince William Parkway becomes Liberia Avenue at Wellington Road. Continue 1.7 miles to Route 28, Centreville Road.
6) Turn right on Route 28 North (Centreville Road), go 9 miles. In Centreville, the road name changes to Sully Road as you approach I-66.

1-1: Hanover Advances, Atlee Falls Late....

Derek Casey took control from the moment he stepped on the mound at Old Dominion University in Norfolk Tuesday night, striking out 12 Kellam Knights on the way to a complete game shutout as the Hawks knocked off the Eastern Region champions 5-0 to advance to the State Group AAA Baseball Semfinal on Friday in Chantilly.

Josh Shepherd led the hitting attack with a two-run double, part of a four-run second inning that gave Casey all the support he needed and then some.

Hanover, now 21-4, will take on Oakton, the Northern Region runner-up, in the 7pm semifinal Friday at Westfield High School.

Meanwhile, in Chesapeake earlier in the afternoon, one Great Bridge swing was just enough to generate the necessary runs to lead the Wildcats, Eastern Region champions, past the Atlee Raiders 2-0, ending Atlee's fantastic 2013 season a game shy of the state final four.

Mattie Fitzgerald, still nursing a broken cheekbone suffered 11 days earlier, dove for a blooper in shallow right field in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runners on for Great Bridge, just missing the ball.  The two Wildcats scored for the only runs of the game.

The Raiders did load the bases in the top of the 7th on a single and two Great Bridge fielding errors, but pitcher Sydney Harless struck out Blair Jones for the final out of the game.

Jessica Holte struck out five in her final game at Atlee. The Raiders also lose shortstop Taylor Sutherland to graduation, but will return seven starters next season.  Congratulations to the Raiders on a season to remember!!

CENTRAL REGION RESULTS....

SOFTBALL: Lauren McIntyre scattered three hits as Lee-Davis took advantage of Patrick Henry defensive miscues to win their Central Region quarterfinal matchup, 5-1 Tuesday night in Ashland.

The Confederates advance to a rematch with defending state champion Cosby, who defeated Matoaca 9-4. Lee-Davis handed Cosby their only loss of 2013, 8-2, three weeks ago in Chesterfield.  The semifinal will be Thursday, 5pm, at Lee-Davis, as they are hosting this year's tournament.  The Confederates will be the "visiting" team.

Atlee advanced in the other bracket, easily handling Mills Godwin 11-2, as Mattie Fitzgerald had two hits in spite of a broken cheekbone and Jessica Holte had two hits, two runs, and nine strikeouts in the circle. The Raiders will play Manchester, 4-0 winners over Dinwiddie Tuesday, in the Thursday 7pm semifinal at Lee-Davis.

Patrick Henry's 15-game winning streak, and season, come to an end at a mark of 18-3.

SOCCER: A disappointing end to the season tonight for both the Atlee boys and girls as both fall at home to Colonial District opponents in Central Region quarterfinal action.

The girls fell 1-0 to Douglas Freeman. Blair Mickel scored in the 10th minute and the Rebels shut out the Raiders to make it the game-winner.  Meanwhile, the boys team battled Deep Run to a 2-2 draw, forcing penalty kicks. The Wildcats nipped Atlee in PK's, 5-4 to take a 3-2 victory, ending the Atlee season.

MONDAY RESULTS: Patriots go 2-1 in Colonial Tournament Action....

The baseball and boys soccer teams move on, while the girls soccer team sees their season come to an end in Colonial District Tournament action Monday night.

Travis Powers pitched 6 1/3 innings while Chesdin Harrington had two hits and the save on the mound as Patrick Henry nipped Maggie Walker Governors School 2-1 in Ashland in the first round of the district tournament.  The Patriots, the #3 seed, next face second-seeded Mills Godwin at approximately 7:30 Tuesday night at J.R. Tucker.

Bryce Bowles scored twice and Garrett Braun added a goal as the Patriots eliminated J.R. Tucker 3-0 in boys soccer 1st round action.  The Patriots advance to face Deep Run in the second semifinal Tuesday at 7:30 at Tucker.

At Mills Godwin, the Patriots girls soccer team saw their season come to an end with a 2-0 loss to the Eagles in 1st round play.

Where We Stand: Baseball and Softball Homestretch.....

Two county teams have clinched district championships, and another is less than 24 hours away.  Let's review the standings with two nights left in the final regular season in Capital and Colonial District history.

COLONIAL SOFTBALL: Patrick Henry clinched at least a tie for their 4th straight title with their 6-0 win Monday over Tucker. But with Tucker losing to Mills Godwin 5-2 Wednesday night, the Patriots have clinched the title outright. The Patriots are 12-0 (15-2 overall) as they travel to Deep Run Thursday evening.  Tucker is second at 9-3, Godwin a half-game behind in third at 9-4.

CAPITAL SOFTBALL: Atlee (10-1, 14-1 overall) will win the Capital title Thursday night with a victory on Senior Night against Glen Allen.  The Jaguars are a tough out, have played county schools close in 2012 and 2013 and have the talent to beat anyone in the district. Plus, if the Raiders win, they'll likely face Glen Allen in the Capital tournament semis next Tuesday. Hanover (9-2, 13-4) are rooting for a Jaguar upset, for it would give them a share of first place and force a playoff game with Atlee for the regular season championship.  The Raiders and Hawks split their 2013 regular season games.  Lee-Davis (8-3, 14-4) has faint hopes to tie for second if Hanover gets tripped up by Varina Thursday night. The Confederates wrap up the season heavily favored to beat Highland Springs on LD's Senior Night tomorrow.

COLONIAL BASEBALL: Douglas Freeman holds a one-game lead over Mills Godwin, with Patrick Henry in third and safely in the home half of the Colonial tournament bracket. The Rebels are 14-1 in the district (18-1 overall), the Eagles now 13-2 after drubbing J.R. Tucker Wednesday night 10-1. Godwin is 14-4 overall. The Patriots are 12-3 (12-6 overall) and will advance to the post-season tournament. They finish the regular season Thursday at Deep Run.

CAPITAL BASEBALL: Hanover (11-1, 16-2) has already clinched the Capital title, but finish with a tricky game against Varina, who needs an upset to keep their season alive Thursday night. Atlee (8-3, 14-3) can clinch second place with a win Thursday against a desperate Glen Allen team, who is fighting with Lee-Davis and Varina for the final two spaces in next week's district tournament.  Here are the current records in the fight for 3rd place:

Varina (7-4, 9-7-1 overall)
Lee-Davis (6-5, 10-8 overall)
Glen Allen (6-5, 10-8 overall)

So, a Varina win clinches 3rd place, and, if Glen Allen knocks off Atlee, the Blue Devils could be in a tie for second. If Varina loses to Hanover and both Lee-Davis and Glen Allen win, they are all 7-5 and three teams get two spots in the tournament.  Who's odd man out in that scenario?  We don't know the current tiebreaker, but we're gonna try to find out.

No matter what Varina does, if one of the two other teams win, that team is in, the other out. So, Lee-Davis will need to beat Highland Springs, and hope for their archrival Atlee to have a good night against the Jaguars.

THURSDAY HIGHLIGHTS....

Our first highlight is that the weather begat brilliant late-day sunshine so we could return to the fields and diamonds of the area!

SOFTBALL: Lee-Davis handed defending Group AAA State Champion Cosby their first loss of the season, defeating the Titans on the road by an 8-2 count. Cosby scored their only runs in the first inning. The Confederates tied the game with two runs in the second, took the lead for good with a run in the third, then broke the game open with 4 runs in the 4th.

Haleigh Cottrell homered for Lee-Davis (12-3) while Amy Wingfield and Becca Hicks each had three hits off Cosby starter Chelsea Whitcomb.  This was Cosby's first loss in any game since a 4-3 defeat to Midlothian on April 18, 2012.

Meanwhile, Ashley Samuels hit two home runs as Patrick Henry shut out Douglas Freeman 6-0 to improve to 11-0 in the Colonial District, alone in first place. Hanover comes to PH to face the Patriots in non-district action Friday at 6pm.

BASEBALL: In a key Colonial battle, Douglas Freeman handcuffed Patrick Henry, as two pitchers combined on a one-hitter leading the Rebels to a 4-0 victory in Ashland.  Chesdin Harrington had the lone hit, a double, for the Patriots, now 10-3 in the Colonial, 10-5 overall.  The Patriots must regroup to face J.R. Tucker Friday at 6pm; it will be Senior Night.

Hanover broke a close game wide open in the 3rd inning en route to an 11-1 thrashing of Lee-Davis at the Hawks' Nest tonight. The win all but clinches the Capital District title for the Hawks, who lead Atlee and Varina by two games, and now Lee-Davis by three.

1) TWO POSTPONEMENTS: The Henrico at Atlee baseball and softball games, moved from Tuesday to tonight, have been moved back again to Monday, 5/13.  Due to this change, the highly anticipated regular season softball game, Atlee at Cosby (#1 in the Region, unbeaten, and defending state champions), has been cancelled.
