First, our Game of The Week on WHAN Radio (102.9 FM/1430 AM) and the RVA Sports Network, as Hanover comes to Atlee. Still the hottest rivalry in Hanover County, even if both teams are coming in at 1-2 with losses last Friday, both at home, as the Hawks fell 28-13 to #11 Hopewell, while Atlee saw a 14-0 fourth quarter lead evaporate as #9 Douglas Freeman scored with 6.2 seconds left to stun the Raiders 20-14.
The importance of this game cannot be overstated. Yes, bragging rights are at stake as always, and Hanover remembers well seeing a 25-6 halftime lead disappear a year ago in Atlee's 31-point third quarter en route to a 44-40 win. Many of the main characters from that game are gone, but one who did not factor in that game returns: Hanover quarterback Clayton Cheatham.
Injured last year, Cheatham missed eight regular season games, including this rivalry. Cheatham will be more than ready to finally get back on the field, now for the final time, against Hanover's arch rivals. Atlee will counter with both freshman Tyler Warren and senior Connor Young under center, both bringing their own skill sets to the Raider offense. Atlee counted on Clifton Woody to handle the bulk of the rushing carries last week as Chris Green was sidelined due to injury.
This game will come down to three areas: turnovers, offensive line play, especially in the fourth quarter, and, frankly, positive desperation. Neither team wants to find themselves with a 1-3 record with the likes of Lee-Davis, Henrico and Highland Springs still ahead on their schedule. The road to the playoffs becomes much more difficult with that 1-3 mark as opposed to 2-2, especially in a very competitive 4A East Region this year, where Hanover not only has to worry about Dinwiddie and Monacan, but Louisa, Chancellor, Courtland and Eastern View.

Speaking of NBC12, Matt Estreich will be live all evening at Patrick Henry, where, for the second year in a row, the Patriots meet Henrico in a battle of unbeatens. Last year, a trip to Azalea Avenue did not go well for the Patriots, and they will look to use both the momentum whipped up by their amazing 31-point second half in last week's comeback road win at Mills Godwin 31-28, and home field advantage as the Warriors must come to Ashland for the first time since 2002.
The Warriors may have lost Xavier Goodall to graduation and the University of Richmond, but now Patrick Henry must deal with sophomore quarterback Jalon Jones, who has improved with every game and is starting to give the Warriors big-time legitimacy in their offense. Led by Akeem Smith, their defense is already well-known, and will have to contend with Patrick Henry's offense, which after struggling in the first half at Mills Godwin, exploded to lead the comeback. Josh Guerrero, Justin McCowan and company must produce, and spread the wealth, as it were, so Henrico doesn't try to key on how Hunter Hart is utilized offensively.
Watch the kicking game in this matchup, as a missed extra point, or good punting to consistently put the opponent deep in their own territory could make a big difference. Henrico won 26-7 last year. Expect this time to be closer, with either team capable of the victory.

Meanwhile, Lee-Davis goes to Varina looking for back-to-back wins over the Blue Devils, something that hasn't happened in a long time. We'll see which personnel are available for head coach Ryan Turnage and company, as the Confederates, again, face a 1-2 Varina squad, who, like Hanover and Atlee, can ill afford to go to 1-3 and seek an easy path to the playoffs, especially in the 5A South Region.
Lee-Davis, in the same region, sees big opportunity if they can continue to pile up wins, with big guns Hermitage, Highland Springs and LC Bird all no longer in the ranks of the unbeaten. If the Confederates want to really prove they've arrived in the Central Region, a win at Varina begins the pathway. Getting a home game, or two, in postseason play would be huge. But it's still September. The team must focus on only the game at hand, and must avoid lack of composure issues that affected them during their win over Glen Allen a week ago.
A victory puts LD at 4-0 with Armstrong next week, then rival Atlee coming to Route 360 in two weeks. The Confederates must control tempo, and not turn the ball over, and count on their experienced offensive line to pave the way to victory.

FOOTBALL: Randolph-Macon To 3-0, But A Ways To Go
The final scores, on the surface, are impressive.
51-0, 44-10, and now, 34-16.
But dig just underneath the surface of Randolph-Macon football's 3-0 start, and you will see, as head coach Pedro Arruza does, a team still learning to execute, and learning to win.
The Yellow Jackets enjoyed a strong performance offensively in the first half, as Tre Frederick, Eric Hoy and Dom Kaopua all scored on short touchdown runs. But another extra point attempt was missed, the third in as many games. The defense allowed a late Methodist touchdown with 31 seconds to halftime, making a 20-3 lead just 20-10.
In the second half, an interception from Joe Vairo (15-of-24, 252 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) and two critical fumbles by Frederick inside the Methodist ten-yard line, ending potential touchdown drives, kept the Monarchs in the contest. But the defense did enough, and the offense reignited, scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns to secure the first 3-0 start, and non-conference sweep, for Randolph-Macon in five years.
"I haven't looked at the film, but it's pretty disappointing," Arruza noted in his office after the game, addressing his players in the locker room beforehand to express his feelings. "We'd better improve a lot, or it's going to catch up to us."
Arruza listed several goals that were handed out in practice last Monday, and each of them, from pursuit angles to holding onto the football, were issues for the Yellow Jackets.
And, while Randolph-Macon's defense only allowed 42 yards of rushing, they were torched for 356 passing yards, 82 of them on a touchdown by Methodist with just over a minute to go. Monarchs quarterback Xavier Adams, given time in the pocket, and, other times buying time via the scramble, completed 24 of 44 passes for 356 yards, two touchdowns, but a key second half interception on a pass tipped by JP Redmond and hauled in by Eric Long.
Adams attacked the secondary given the Yellow Jackets' defensive line's inability to get to the quarterback consistently like they did in three quarters last Saturday in the 44-10 win over Averett.
Catholic and Randolph-Macon have ended their non-conference schedules at 3-0. Surprisingly, Hampden-Sydney, picked second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) preseason poll behind defending champion Washington and Lee, is 0-3. The Generals themselves are struggling, falling late to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday evening 31-28 to fall to 1-2.
There is no doubt the Tigers, Generals, and others, will right their ships. Everyone is 0-0 in conference play. The door of opportunity is there for Randolph-Macon, picked to finish fifth overall.
But the Yellow Jackets must quickly fix the problems that are there, before, as Arruza says, they catch up with them.
Randolph-Macon is off next Saturday, then begins ODAC play with a Thursday night game at Shenandoah (2-1) on September 29th. The Yellow Jackets return to Day Field for Family Weekend October 8th against Bridgewater (1-2) at 1pm.

Flashback: Lee-Davis Moves To 2-0, #8 In Latest Poll
On the heels of Lee-Davis moving up another position to eighth in the new NBC12/RVA Sports Network Big 12 High School Football Poll Monday, here is a look back at their 47-17 win at Prince George Friday from RVA Sports Network Intern Correspondent Bryan Diehr.
The Confederates of Lee-Davis High School traveled to Prince George Friday night in a showdown of 5A South contenders. coming off of a 35-0 thrashing of J.R. Tucker in week one and the Royals came off a nail-biting win against Clover Hill 28-24. The tough front seven of LD would be the first real test for senior running back Malaki Gurley who had 230 yards on the ground to go with three touchdowns last week. Senior running back Nathan Evans of LD with a slow week last week (22 carries for 87 yards) looked to rebound against the Royals.
Prince George jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on their first drive courtesy of a 23 yard heave from Edward Walker to receiver Keith Brown. After that, the Confederate run game was unstoppable with rushing touchdowns by Nathan Evans and Hayden Walsh before the end of the first. Three more LD rushing touchdowns, two coming from Evans, blew the game wide open before the half, giving Lee-Davis a comfortable 34-7 lead at the break.
A slow offensive second half on both sides but the Confederate defense stayed strong forcing one pick-six and just ten points to the Royals offense. Sophomore Quarterback Zach Lass was able to connect with Senior Tight End Connor Scott for a seven yard touchdown in the third quarter which was the icing on the cake. Lee-Davis came out with a thrashing 47-17 victory over Prince George to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Evans had a big night, rushing for 153 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. Also helping out in the run game were seniors Hayden Walsh (12 carries, 54 yards, 1 TD) and Jarel Braxton (6 carries, 74 yards, 1 TD). Zach Lass threw for a solid 128 yards along with a Touchdown to Connor Scott. Huge defensive help from Andrew Anthony and Jamir Johnson as both came up with an interception in the second half.
Royals’ powerhouse running back Malaki Gurley was shut down most of the night as he was held to just 59 yards on 17 carries. Also, Edward Walker was just 10-28 passing with 137 yards along with a touchdown to Keith Brown.
Lee-Davis Coach Ryan Turnage was not happy with how the second half went offensively. They put up just 13 second half points, seven of them coming off of an Andrew Anthony pick-six. Last week, they put up just 14 second half points against J.R. Tucker.
“We have to figure it out. We played great in the first half but came out slow on offense in the second. We need to be able to play the whole game,” said Coach Turnage after the game.
The Confederates are stacked with a triple threat in the backfield with three seniors. Led by Nathan Evans, Hayden Walsh and Jarel Braxton both get carries to give Evans the needed rest. The three rushers combined for 171 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Coach Turnage is satisfied with his rushing attack in the first two games so far.
“It’s great to give Nate a rest. It takes the pressure off of him. We just have to keep coaching them up and getting better every week,” said Coach Turnage.
Evans’ rushing attack takes a lot of pressure off the sophomore quarterback in Zach Lass. Lass now has had two games under his belt to get used to the playbook and playing on the varsity level. He is relieved to have such a breakout running back behind him.
“We can rely on him to pick up yardage so I don’t have to make the big throws on every drive,” said Lass.
Lee-Davis is back at home to host Glen Allen next Friday. They look to shut down the passing attack from Alex Faniel in hopes to improve to 3-0 this season.

FOOTBALL: Two County Teams In Preseason High School Football Poll
The inaugural 2016 preseason NBC12/RVA Sports Network Big 12 High School Football Poll was released Tuesday night, and two county teams made the cut: one a poll mainstay, the other a team hoping to continue its renaissance, proving they are not a one-year wonder.
The Hanover Hawks begin the season ranked at #8. Hanover has made the playoffs every year since 2006 and open the season at home Friday September 2nd hosting #3 Dinwiddie on our RVA Sports Network Game of The Week, to be heard on WHAN Radio, 102.9 FM and 1430 AM.
The Lee-Davis Confederates start the season ranked 12th overall. After a big 9-3 season, Lee-Davis hopes to use a strong running attack led by Nathan Evans and returning offensive lineman back to the postseason.

FIELD HOCKEY: Atlee, Lee-Davis Win Openers
Atlee scored three unanswered goals, taking the lead for good on a second half tally from Sarah Ball to defeat Mills Godwin 3-2 Monday afternoon in the 2016 season opener for both teams.
Lee-Davis also began their season with a victory, defeating J.R. Tucker 3-1 as Claria McMillion, Ciarra Ashworth and Katie Drawdy each scored for the 1-0 Confederates.

Basketball: Patrick Henry Camp Begins Monday!
It's not too late to sign up for the Annual Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Basketball Camp that begins Monday at the school. Here's the latest information from the varsity coaches.

VHSL: Patrick Henry May Move To 4A In Next Realignment
When the Virginia High School League (VHSL) released its newest set of "ADM Numbers", which is essentially a list of student population totals of each member school, Patrick Henry High School in Ashland found itself amongst a new group of institutions.
At 1,435 students, Patrick Henry was listed as the ninth highest populated school in the 4A classification. The Patriots have been in the 5A classification, and in the 5A North Region, since the VHSL began working under a new six-classification system, eschewing districts in the playoffs for conferences in 2013. Patrick Henry has fifteen less students than the lowest populated school listed for 5A, Warwick High, who has 1,450 students.
When you look at the ADM report, however, you'll notice some disparity. Six of the eight schools listed above Patrick Henry have actual attendance figures higher than Warwick, but are listed as proposed 5A schools (Woodgrove, Deep Creek, Midlothian, King's Fork, Dominion and Huguenot). This is not special to 4A as each classification has some crossover in an attempt to keep the number of schools in classification, and, to a lesser extent, to their regions, as even as possible.
The VHSL released its agenda for the latest Alignment Committee meeting scheduled for August 4 in Charlottesville on Monday. Atlee is one of several schools asking for a change to the original plan, moving from the new 5A North to the new 5A Central Region. The committee recommended by vote in January to approve the move, but at the time, the move included Patrick Henry, too.
Now, with the Patriots proposed to move to 4A, joining Hanover, here are the proposed regions that will affect Hanover County beginning with the 2017-18 school year:
5A Central: Atlee, L.C. Bird, Deep Run, Douglas Freeman, Glen Allen, Mills Godwin, Henrico, Hermitage, Highland Springs, Lee-Davis, Matoaca, Meadowbrook, Prince George, J.R. Tucker, Varina
4A Central: Caroline, Chancellor, Courtland, Dinwiddie, Eastern View, Hanover, Patrick Henry, Huguenot, King George, Louisa, Midlothian, Monacan, Powhatan
Some important notes:
--All four county schools will continue to be in the Capital District for regular season scheduling, meaning a continuation of home and home series between all schools in most sports that began this past year when Patrick Henry was moved from the Colonial District to the Capital in exchange for Glen Allen.
--Conferences will be no more under the newest realignment plan. District Tournaments, last held in the 2012-13 school year, will be resurrected in Metro Richmond. In depth details on if, and if so, how, district results would affect individual region seedings are not yet known. They may have no effect whatsoever.
--For Atlee and Lee-Davis, there were be no significant travel during 5A Central Region tournament play. The Raiders are the northern most school of the fifteen proposed, while Prince George is at the southern end. Travel will come into play again at just the state level, a move which should help the financial budgets of both school's athletic departments.
--For Patrick Henry and Hanover, the proposed thirteen-team 4A Central Region will pose some travel at the region tournament level. Chancellor and Courtland are both in Spotsylvania County, King George lies to the east of there, and Eastern View poses the biggest trip, a ride to Culpeper, Eastern View is 65 miles from Patrick Henry, 78 from Hanover. The fringe counties of Louisa, Dinwiddie, Caroline and Powhatan are included as well.
Here are the next steps:
1) The VHSL Alignment Committee votes on appeals at its August 4 meeting.
2) The committee's final recommendation will move to the Executive Committee, who is currently set to vote on September 21.

Four Out Of Five: Mechanicsville Post 175 Wins American Legion Crown
It's hard to believe now that, just four years ago, on a humid night in Powhatan County in 2012 when, after many years of trying, Mechanicsville Post 175 baseball finally won an American Legion District 11 Championship, in the midst of a record-setting unbeaten season where Mechanicsville didn't suffer its first defeat until the State Tournament in Stafford County.
Thursday night at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, Post 175 head coach Bobby White thought back for a moment to that program-changing event.
"175, with all the great players that had come through before, had never won a district title before 2012," White recalled. "To be a part of that run, then be here as a part of this run when it's now been four out of five years, and to be in the finals five straight years, and win the winners bracket final five straight years, it's been a pretty fun five years for Post 175."
Now Mechanicsville looks ahead, once again, at a trip to the Virginia State Tournament, looking to again make history, but this time at the next level. But first, Post 175 had to, once and for all, end a great rivalry with South Richmond Post 137 that began on opening night when Mechanicsville's defense collapsed, and so did a lead, as South Richmond won at Hanover 10-8, continued with Post 175's win at L.C. Bird High School, then saw round three become a crazy night in the tournament winners bracket final just 48 hours earlier, Post 175 seeing a 9-1 lead disappear before holding on for a victory.
White believed the freshness of that game drove his team in the championship round Thursday night to counterpunch when Post 137 mounted the expected comeback, as Mechanicsville saw an 8-1 lead dwindle to 8-5 in the fifth inning.
Enter Patrick Henry graduate William Strong, who, with two outs and runners at first and second, launched a key double to the left field wall for two critical runs. The lead was back to five, and South Richmond never threatened fully again.
Justin Bishop's middle relief work for starter Tyler Morgan weathered the final pushes from South Richmond, but this championship game belonged to the bats, as Mechanicsville scored at least once in every inning from the second to the eighth, the clincher belonging to second baseman and 2015 Atlee graduate Brandon Crosby, who launched a fly ball over the head of the right fielder to score the winning run to invoke the ten-run rule.
"If I went 0-for-8 tonight, that would be fine so long as we got the victory," Crosby said, admitting he had struggled at the plate during the regular season. "That's all I really look for. If we're winning, that's all that matters to me."
Another key performance, this one defensively, came from Aaron Saunders at shortstop. Saunders had struggled in some recent games at the position, but came up strong in the championship, especially in the fifth inning, ending the South Richmond rally at four runs when it could have been much more, and in the seventh, as he charged on a tough grounder off the bat of Jonathan Triesler, firing to first for the third out to strand two Post 137 runners and draw Mechanicsville closer to victory.
The 2016 Virginia State Tournament will begin Tuesday in Danville, a three-hour journey for Post 175, and finally, far enough away from Mechanicsville that they will be able to not worry about daily travel to and from the tournament site. "We've got a really good team, but we're going to be challenged," White explained. "If we bring our 'A' game, if our pitchers can throw strikes and our hitters can do what they've done the last week or so, we're going to be okay. But if we don't take our best down there, we'll get beat."
Mechanicsville begins another charge at the elusive state championship Tuesday at the American Legion field in Danville.
Thursday night at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, Post 175 head coach Bobby White thought back for a moment to that program-changing event.
"175, with all the great players that had come through before, had never won a district title before 2012," White recalled. "To be a part of that run, then be here as a part of this run when it's now been four out of five years, and to be in the finals five straight years, and win the winners bracket final five straight years, it's been a pretty fun five years for Post 175."
Now Mechanicsville looks ahead, once again, at a trip to the Virginia State Tournament, looking to again make history, but this time at the next level. But first, Post 175 had to, once and for all, end a great rivalry with South Richmond Post 137 that began on opening night when Mechanicsville's defense collapsed, and so did a lead, as South Richmond won at Hanover 10-8, continued with Post 175's win at L.C. Bird High School, then saw round three become a crazy night in the tournament winners bracket final just 48 hours earlier, Post 175 seeing a 9-1 lead disappear before holding on for a victory.
White believed the freshness of that game drove his team in the championship round Thursday night to counterpunch when Post 137 mounted the expected comeback, as Mechanicsville saw an 8-1 lead dwindle to 8-5 in the fifth inning.
Enter Patrick Henry graduate William Strong, who, with two outs and runners at first and second, launched a key double to the left field wall for two critical runs. The lead was back to five, and South Richmond never threatened fully again.
Justin Bishop's middle relief work for starter Tyler Morgan weathered the final pushes from South Richmond, but this championship game belonged to the bats, as Mechanicsville scored at least once in every inning from the second to the eighth, the clincher belonging to second baseman and 2015 Atlee graduate Brandon Crosby, who launched a fly ball over the head of the right fielder to score the winning run to invoke the ten-run rule.
"If I went 0-for-8 tonight, that would be fine so long as we got the victory," Crosby said, admitting he had struggled at the plate during the regular season. "That's all I really look for. If we're winning, that's all that matters to me."
Another key performance, this one defensively, came from Aaron Saunders at shortstop. Saunders had struggled in some recent games at the position, but came up strong in the championship, especially in the fifth inning, ending the South Richmond rally at four runs when it could have been much more, and in the seventh, as he charged on a tough grounder off the bat of Jonathan Triesler, firing to first for the third out to strand two Post 137 runners and draw Mechanicsville closer to victory.
The 2016 Virginia State Tournament will begin Tuesday in Danville, a three-hour journey for Post 175, and finally, far enough away from Mechanicsville that they will be able to not worry about daily travel to and from the tournament site. Cheatham Chooses Virginia
Four years ago, after looking at all of his options following his senior football season at Hanover High School, a gentleman by the name of Sam Rogers opted to walk on at Virginia Tech, feeling his best opportunity was in Blacksburg. We all know how that decision has turned out.
Now, Clayton Cheatham, a player inevitably compared to Rogers during his time in a Hawks uniform due to the similar styles and athletic abilities, has made a somewhat similar decision. The rising senior didn't want to wait until after football season, turning down scholarship offers from other institutions to follow where he feels is the best fit for him, and his dream school all along.
Cheatham announced via Twitter late Sunday evening that he will head to Charlottesville to join the University of Virginia in the fall of 2017, turning down offers from other in-state institutions ranging from the University of Richmond and Old Dominion to James Madison University, where his older brother Deane converted from tailback to tight end and turned in a stellar career for the Dukes with 94 career receptions for 1,110 yards and nine touchdowns.
"Everything was right at UVA, academically and football-wise," Cheatham told RVA Sports Network late Sunday night. "It is the right fit for me, it gives me an opportunity to do what I want academically for the future, plus, it was the school I've wanted to be at for a long time."
The final reason is an intangible that is very difficult to overcome if you are a university trying to convince a student-athlete to join your program over the one whose poster has possibly been on their bedroom wall for years. Some succeed, but not in this case. And for Cheatham, it was simply a matter of knowing where he wanted to spend his future, deciding to end all speculation before his senior season with the Hawks kicks off at home September 2nd against rival Dinwiddie.
"I just knew I wanted to be at UVA," Cheatham explained. "I had made up my mind, so I didn't want to drag it out."
Cheatham, who spent more time on the sidelines than on the field in 2015 due to an ankle injury in Hanover's opening game win at Dinwiddie, still accounted for fourteen touchdowns in 2015 and just over 1,000 yards of total offense. Though there are departures via graduation along the powerful Hanover offensive line, the Hawks have spent a decade replenishing that position. They will be counted on to help open holes for Cheatham in his final season as a Hawk.
The new coaching staff at Scott Stadium, led by former Brigham Young head coach Bronco Mendenhall played a "very influential" role in Cheatham's decision to say yes to the Cavaliers.
"They are a very family-oriented staff, but they preach discipline and doing the little things right, which we do a lot of at Hanover also," Cheatham said, also commenting on not being frightened by his future walk-on status.
"No, I'm confident in my ability and believe I can get up there and make some noise," Cheatham noted.
For Mendenhall, and patient Cavalier fans, they look forward to watching Cheatham make noise for them soon. But first, the rising senior has unfinished business, and would love nothing more than to finally take Hanover to its first state championship game. The Hawks are 0-4 all-time in state semifinal games in their brief, but storied fourteen year history. #10 hopes to make Season #15 one for the ages.

Lyttle, Dragum Sweep 4A State Baseball Awards....

It's a rematch of the 2015 Finals as the Atlee Raiders must again overcome the Hickory Hawks in order to win back-to-back 5A State Championships.
Atlee defeated Lee-Davis 7-1 in the semifinals, powered by two three-run home runs from Raine Wilson and Casey Barrett, while Hickory nipped Halifax in the other semifinal 1-0.

Our coverage begins Friday at 12:15pm with defending 5A State Champion Atlee taking on 5A South Region champion Lee-Davis in their third meeting of the season for the right to play for the state championship.
