Hanover Falls In Field Hockey Region Final; State Tourney Still Ahead

The Maggie Walker Governors School upended Hanover 3-1 last night to win their second straight Central Region Field Hockey title.

Julieanne Moore scored the lone goal for the Hawks, who do advance to the State Group AAA Playoffs, traveling to South County on Tuesday night for a first-round match.

Hanover Upsets Atlee To Win Boys Volleyball Crown

Hunter Locks had 48 assists, five digs and four aces to lead No. 2 Hanover to the Capital District crown over No. 1 Atlee, 3-1.

Drew Hazelgrove had 15 kills and six digs, and William Atwood had 13 kills, three aces and two blocks for the Hawks.

Billy Dishman had 33 assists, 10 digs, three kills and two blocks for the Raiders.

Capital District Boys and Girls Volleyball Tourneys start today!

The Boys semifinals will take place at Varina High School as top-seeded Atlee will square off against #4 Glen Allen at 6pm, followed by #2 Hanover facing #3 Highland Springs.

Winner meets in the championship game Wednesday night at Glen Allen High School on Staples Mill Road at 6pm.

The Girls semifinals begin today at 6pm at Glen Allen High with #1 Atlee facing #4 Glen Allen, followed by #2 Lee-Davis against #3 Hanover around 7:30pm.

Patriots win five-set thriller in District Volleyball opener....

14 kills and 11 blocks by Lucas Pienkowski and a 29 kill performance from Scott Brigham helped Patrick Henry survive Hermitage in a five-set thriller in the first round of the 2011 Colonial District Boys Volleyball Tournament. The final scores were 23-25, 26-24, 25-16, 26-24, 15-12.

The Patriots now move on to Wednesday's tournament semifinals against top-seeded Deep Run.

UPDATE--Patrick Henry fell to Deep Run in the tournament semis.

Central Region Field Hockey Tourney Action!

Congratulations to Hanover who won their quarterfinal game in the 2011 Central Region Field Hockey Tournament, 2-0 over Matoaca. The Hawks, now 17-2, will next face Cosby Wednesday night in the Region Semifinals.

The Atlee Raiders lost their quarterfinal match to Thomas Dale 4-0, finishing their 2011 season with a record of 12-5.

Hanover Defeats Lee-Davis

L.J. Jones rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns, while Justin Peebles had a big game at wide receiver as Hanover held serve at home with a 38-20 win over Lee-Davis in the Hanover County High School Football Game of the Week tonight.

Andrew Knizner, in his second game starting for the injured Sam Rogers, went 11 of 16 for 162 yards with one touchdown to Peebles.

Israel Vaughan, the Lee-Davis quarterback, rushed 18 times for 162 yards, plus went 7 of 17 for 62 yards and a touchdown pass to Tyrell Eaton. Vaughan rushed for the other two Lee-Davis scores.

Hanover, now 4-1, 7-1, hopes to trip up Varina at home next week for a share of the Capital District title. Lee-Davis, now 2-3, 4-4, will face Armstrong at home next week in a fight for their playoff lives.

Hanover Wins Capital District Field Hockey Title

Abby Bellows led the Hawks with two goals as Hanover defeated Atlee 4-1 in the Capital District Tournament Championship last night. The Hawks took a 3-0 lead to the half and never looked back, winning their 16th game of the year.

Atlee is now 11-3 on the season. Congratulations to both Hanover County teams!

Wednesday Fall Sports Results

FIELD HOCKEY:

Patrick Henry fell to second-seed Maggie Walker Governors School 4-1 in the Colonial District Tournament semifinals. Schyler Neal scored the PH goal while Kara Lloyd made 27 saves. MWGS is now 16-1, while Patrick Henry finishes 5-12-1.

In the Capital District championship game tonight, it will be #2 Atlee vs. #1 Hanover, with game time at 7pm.

CAPITAL DISTRICT TOURNAMENT:

Second-seeded Atlee defeated third-seeded Lee-Davis 2-1 in double overtime to advance to the District Finals where they will play top-seeded Hanover. Emily Dietrick scored the game winning goal in the second overtime period. Hanover defeated Henrico in the other semifinal match, 2-1, scoring both of their goals in the first half.

Lee-Davis finishes their season with a record of 7-6, while Atlee improves to 11-2 and Hanover to 15-2.

The Raiders and Hawks meet for the Capital District Tournament Title Thursday at 7pm.

COLONIAL DISTRICT TOURNAMENT:

Melissa Bresko scored in the second overtime to give fifth-seeded Patrick Henry a 2-1 upset over fourth-seeded J.R. Tucker in the District quarterfinals. The Patriots move on to face the top seed, the Maggie Walker Governor's School, in the semifinals at 6pm tonight.

Atlee, Hanover, Patrick Henry Post Wins in Week Seven....

L.J. Jones rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hanover Hawks past Armstrong 44-0 in Capital District play Friday night. Quarterback Andrew Knizner, playing for the injured Sam Rogers, threw a touchdown pass. Hanover is now 3-1 in the Capital, 6-1 overall.


Ruben Rucker passed for 213 yards and four touchdowns, including two to Will McCombs, plus rushed for a fifth as Atlee rolled over Glen Allen, 56-20. Atlee scored on its first possession on a nine-play, 71 yard drive that only took 1:12. The Raiders go to 3-1 in the Capital, 6-1 overall and will stay in the #1 position in Division 5 playoff points.

Raymond Minor scored a touchdown for Patrick Henry as the Patriots finally got their first win of the 2011 season, 41-0 over Thomas Jefferson in front of a Homecoming crowd in Ashland. The Patriots are now 1-3, 1-6 and face J.R. Tucker on the road next Friday.

The lone loss in the county Friday was by Lee-Davis, whose playoff hopes took a hit with a 38-14 loss to Highland Springs. Chris Simpson and Tyrell Eaton each scored touchdowns for the Confederates, who drop to 2-2, 4-3. Coupled with John Marshall's win over Douglas Freeman, Lee-Davis will likely drop from #3 to #4 in the Division 5 playoff standings with three games left in the regular season.

Week Six Results!

Wild night for Hanover schools, as they go 2-2 in tonight's action.

Lee-Davis took care of Glen Allen at home, 33-7, to go to 4-2 and solidify their hold on a Division 5 playoff berth.

Hanover gets a late field goal to escape with a 24-21 home win over Henrico, but lose quarterback Sam Rogers in the first quarter to an apparent elbow injury. CBS6 is reporting he suffered a dislocated elbow and he could be out for the season. We'll keep you posted.

Atlee went to Varina undefeated and left somewhat deflated. Varina scored early and often en route to a huge 54-11 victory over the Raiders, their first loss of 2011.

Patrick Henry is still winless after falling at Deep Run 35-14. Two Bryson Wong touchdown runs in the first quarter gave the Patriots an early 14-7 lead, but Deep Run outscored PH 21-0 in the second half for the victory, led by 201 rushing yards and four touchdowns by Evan Hinkle.

PLAYOFFS NOTE: With losses by Dinwiddie and Petersburg tonight to both go to 2-4 and Midlothian losing to L.C. Bird, Lee-Davis' victory over Glen Allen should place them in firm control of the final playoff berth in Division 5 with four games to play. In fact, they may come close to the #3 seed after John Marshall lost to Hermitage 38-6. Atlee and Hanover are expected to continue to be in the top two in Division 5 point standings.

Capital clash with a cause

Atlee (18-3, 9-0 Capital) will travel to Lee-Davis (12-1, 8-1) on Tuesday for a pivotal district showdown. On the line are bragging rights and district supremacy.

The Raiders won the first meeting 25-15, 25-13, 25-5 on Sept. 22, but Atlee coach Curtis Carpenter is taking nothing for granted.

"I know they will be improved and better prepared," he wrote in an email. "It is, and always has been, a big rivalry, and being on their floor I know that their fans will be loud and rockin'."

More importantly, perhaps, is the Confederates have declared Tuesday Go Pink/Dig for Pink night to raise awareness for breast cancer. Both squads will be decked out in pink, and money collected from bake sales and raffles will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

"Not only is it Dig for Pink night, which means a lot to us, but the girls know what's on the line, so they'll be fired up," Carpenter wrote.

Unofficial VHSL Rating Points Standings after games of September 30th

Going into Friday night's showdown, Hanover and Atlee are currently #1 and #2 respectively, unofficially, in VHSL rating points which help determine who makes the playoffs in the Central Region!

Lee-Davis is not far behind in a three-way tie for fifth with Dinwiddie and J.R. Tucker. The top four teams make the playoffs, and, remember, District champions receive automatic bids, with the rest of the playoff berths earned on VHSL rating points, and NOT head-to-head competition.

This makes Friday's Hawks/Raiders showdown important, as the victor will have the inside track to the Capital District title and an automatic berth. The past two seasons have not been kind to Atlee in VHSL rating points, putting them on the outside of the playoffs looking in. The Raiders would love to hold serve at home and take a giant step towards their first playoff bid in 13 years.

Lee-Davis Field Hockey moved to 3-0 in the Capital District, 5-1 overall, with a 5-1 victory over Glen Allen Wednesday.

In Cross County, the Patrick Henry Boys team defeated J.R. Tucker 25-34, but lost to Maggie Walker Governor's School 17-46 at Poor Farm Park. Meanwhile the Girls team also defeated J.R. Tucker, 18-43 while falling to Maggie Walker GS, 18-45.

On Tuesday evening, the Hanover Boys Volleyball team swept Henrico in 3 sets to move to 7-1 on the season, 5-0 in the Capital District. Lee-Davis lost a close three-set match to Highland Springs to fall to 4-4 overall, 2-4 in the Capital. Patrick Henry fell to Douglas Freeman in three close sets, moving to 2-7 overall, 2-5 in the Colonial, while Atlee swept Armstrong in Capital District play.

The Lee-Davis Girls Volleyball team continued their strong play with a straight-set rout over Highland Springs to go to 7-1 overall, 4-1 in the Capital. First-place Atlee improved to 13-1, 5-0 by demolishing Armstrong. Hanover kept pace with Lee-Davis in the District with a win over Henrico to go to 4-1 in the Capital, 6-6 overall.

Lee-Davis Wins 2011 Tomato Bowl!

For the fifth straight season, the visitors conquered in the Tomato Bowl, as Lee-Davis came to Ashland and defeated Patrick Henry, 16-14.

Tyrell Eaton was the star of the game for the Confederates, rushing for a touchdown, converting two important 2-point conversions (the second one on a second effort at the goal line in the 3rd quarter proved to be the winning margin), and intercepting a Khalil Mock pass late in the fourth quarter to help secure the victory.

Chris Simpson rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown. For the Patriots, sophomore quarterback Tyler Phelps got his first start and put PH on the board first with a 55-yard touchdown strike to Bryson Wong late in the first quarter. Phelps was hit hard late in the third quarter and was on the field for over 20 minutes. He was taken to the hospital for observation and sources tell HanoverCountySports.org that he is recovering.

Mock, in relief of Phelps, led PH on a touchdown drive in the fourth to cut it to two, connecting with Raymon Minor from 23 yards out to make it 16-14. A risky fourth and one call at midfield by Lee-Davis to go for it was quashed by K.J. Evans, the Patriots' star on defense this night, giving Patrick Henry a chance to win the game. But the Mock interception ended their final hopes.

Lee-Davis, now 2-1, travel to Varina for an important Capital District opener Friday night. Varina will be missing eight players, three of them starters including their quarterback, due to suspensions.

Patrick Henry, now 0-3, must travel Friday afternoon to Richmond to take on the resurgent 3-0 John Marshall Justices in a 4:45pm game, kicking off their Colonial District schedule.

Three Big Wins For Hanover County Teams in Week Two

Sam Rogers continues to put up huge numbers, leading Hanover to a 56-7 home win over J.R. Tucker Friday night. So far this season, Sam has only one incompleted pass.

Meanwhile Lee-Davis got an important home win over another Division 5 playoff hopeful, defeating Hopewell 27-12 to even their record at 1-1 going into the Tomato Bowl next week.

They'll head to Ashland to face a smarting Patrick Henry squad, now 0-2 after taking a 44-6 beating at the hands of Ruben Rucker and Atlee, who are also 2-0.

Next week, Hanover travels to Deep Run, who lost to Henrico to go to 0-2, Atlee travels to Douglas Freeman, and our "Hanover County High School Football Game of the Week" will be the renewal of the oldest county rivalry, Lee-Davis and Patrick Henry!

FINAL: Atlee 44, Patrick Henry 6

Ruben Rucker is a force to be reckoned with.

After leading Atlee to a rout of Deep Run last week, the Raiders made it two in a row with a 44-6 thumping of Patrick Henry Friday night.

Rucker threw four touchdown passes, three in the first half to Will McCombs, giving the Raiders a 23-0 halftime lead. Shaquille Williams caught two touchdown passes, one from Rucker.

Atlee moves to 2-0 heading to Douglas Freeman next week. Patrick Henry drops to 0-2 and must face Lee-Davis in Ashland next Friday in the Tomato Bowl.

Hanover Fall Update

The boys volleyball team opened their 2011 Capital District schedule with a 3-0 sweep over Varina. Tyler Peck had 12 kills and 3 aces for Hawks, now 2-1 overall.

Jordan Martin served 4 aces, and Jordan Goodman had 3 kills as Lee-Davis' Girls Volleyball team took a 3-0 win over Henrico in their Capital District opener. The Confederates are 3-0 this season.

Meanwhile, the Field Hockey fell to Atlee, 4-0, in their first Capital District game of 2011. Their overall record is now 1-1.

Update on Atlee Fall Sports

Meg Bowers had 10 kills as the Atlee girls volleyball team improved to 10-1 win a straight-set win over Glen Allen in Capital District play. This was the District opener for both schools.

Meanwhile the boys volleyball squad swept Glen Allen as well to improve to 5-2 on the year, 1-0 in the Capital.

The golf team finished second by three strokes in play against Hanover and Lee-Davis.....

...the field hockey team shut out Glen Allen 6-0 to improve to 2-0 in the Capital District, 2-2 overall.

And congrats to the Atlee girls Cross Country team, finishing third in Saturday's Fork Union Invitational.

Atlee Rolls In Opener: Lee-Davis Shut Out

New Atlee quarterback Ruber Rucker's debut was highly successful, going 25 of 35 for 217 yards and one passing touchdown, plus 11 rushes for 80 yards and two touchdowns as the Raiders handled Deep Run with surprising ease on opening night, 55-14.

Meanwhile, Lee-Davis struggled on the road against defending Division 6 Regional Champion Hermitage, as the Panthers shut out the Confederates 27-0.

Next week, Atlee welcomes Patrick Henry while Lee-Davis has its home opener against Hopewell.

Game Of The Week---Hanover 42, Patrick Henry 14

In the world of high school football, Sam Rogers is a man among boys.

Only 5-11 and 200 pounds, what Rogers may lack in height he more than makes up for in skill, lower body strength, agility, and, most importantly for the Hanover Hawks, experience.

Only a junior, Rogers started his 26th game at quarterback for Hanover last night, leading the Hawks offense on five consecutive touchdown drives to help cement an opening night 42-14 victory over rival Patrick Henry.

Patrick Henry actually began the game with a well-executed, time-consuming drive of over eight minutes. But after converting three times on third down during the drive, they failed to convert on a fourth down from the Hanover 16 and ended the drive empty-handed on the scoreboard.

Rogers took it from there.

In a nine-minute span of the second quarter, he led the Hawks down the field four times, mixing strong running with timely passing. He and new tailback L.J. Jones each scored two rushing touchdowns, giving Hanover a comfortable 28-0 halftime lead.

After Rogers scored his third TD of the night early in the third quarter, his night was done. Andrew Knizner finished the game at quarterback, scoring his own touchdown early in the fourth.

Both of Patrick Henry's touchdowns came in the fourth quarter, with new QB Khalil Mock connecting on a 71-yard bomb to wideout Raymon Minor. Then, after a Hanover turnover deep in their own territory, Mock found Minor in the left corner of the end zone for a seven-yard touchdown pass, a play that featured Minor's athleticism as he jumped over his defender to grab the ball in one-on-one coverage.

Hanover has now won six straight against Patrick Henry and lead the overall series 6-4. Patrick Henry starts 0-1 for the fifth straight year.

Tucker, who came back from a 21-7 deficit to beat Glen Allen 36-21, while Patrick Henry must travel to face an Atlee Raider squad coming off a rout of Deep Run, 55-14. Hermitage holds off PH, Patriots finish 5-5

A Hermitage kickoff return from Tristen Wright with :22 left in the first half stole the momentum away from the Patrick Henry Patriots Friday night in their Colonial District finale, giving the Panthers a 21-7 halftime lead on their way to a 41-28 victory.

The Panthers took the ball to start the second half and promptly marched 65 yards for another touchdown, and, with 2:43 to go in the third, Hermitage was firmly in command, 41-7. Playing against many second-stringers, the Patriots staged a comeback that climaxed with Brian Houchens intercepting a Dylan Jackson pass and returning it 85 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 41-28.

Brendon Riddick then returned to the field to lead the Panthers on a drive which ate up the remaining 4:02 of the clock, taking a knee inside the Patriot red zone to end the game.

Patrick Henry finishes 5-5 overall, but 4-3 in Colonial District, good for third place behind Hermitage and Deep Run. Both records are improvements over the disappointing 2009 season, where the Pats went 3-4 in the Colonial, 3-7 overall.

Certainly the highlight of the 2010 season will always be Coach Sam Hart's first victory at the helm, when the Patriots came back from a 24-0 deficit to win the Tomato Bowl at Lee-Davis, 25-24. Who knew as Jay Waller gleefully ran off the Mechanicsville field with the Tomato Bowl trophy that the loss would eventually cost PH's archrivals, the Confederates, a shot at the playoffs.

Now on to basketball and other winter sports at Patrick Henry! Good luck all teams and Go Patriots!

Week Six: Patrick Henry 6, Mills Godwin 3

The last time the Patrick Henry Patriots traveled to Axselle Stadium to face the Mills Godwin Eagles, the teams combined for 85 points as Godwin came back to nip the Patriots, 43-42. All of us in the press box couldn't remember the last time Patrick Henry scored 42 points....and lost.

Apparently the 2007 teams used up most of the points alloted by the football gods for the 2010 renewal Friday night.

Patriot fans knew coming into this Colonial District battle that points would come at a premium. Mills Godwin's defense held Highland Springs to 13 points earlier in the season, and survived a road test against John Marshall, the two teams' only common opponent in 2010.

Thus, when the Pats took the opening kickoff 80 yards, all on the ground, straight to the end zone, it was a pleasant surprise, and super start for the road team. Several times during the night I mentioned that I thought six points wouldn't be enough to win on the road.

I was proven wrong.

This was a game where the pessimist would say, "Neither team wants it. They're trying to give the game to the other team." Meanwhile, the optimist would declare, "both defenses have spent the night bending but not breaking, keeping their teams alive!"

Mills Godwin spent most of the second quarter in Patriot territory, thrice knocking on the door. The first drive ended on downs after Godwin failed on 4th down to move the chain. On the second and third possessions, Godwin kicker Whit Beebe missed on field goal attempts of 38 and 33 yards, on a side of the field quickly becoming muddy thanks to the rain of the previous 48 hours.

The Eagles only score would be, ironically, on the first possession of the second half, mirroring the Patriots but not equalling the score output, as their drive stalled and Beebe, who came back from halftime early to do some quick kicking practice, nailed a 23-yarder to cut the lead to 6-3.

Then, for the next 30-40 minutes of real time, they knocked, and knocked, and knocked on the door, thought once they'd knocked it down, but, in the end, did not.

Meanwhile, for the second straight week, the Patriots showed they don't yet have the poise and experience to make the key plays in the second half to close out games with authority. The Patriots twice had it first and goal. Both times the Pats commmitted offensive penalties to back themselves up.

The first drive ended controversially, when QB Jay Waller, seemingly going down for a tackle, tried a very ill-advised shovel pass to Brian Houchens. In the end, the referees ruled it a fumble, and Tom Solak picked up the ball and ran it some 94 yards for an apparent go-ahead Eagles touchdown. Confusion swept the stadium.

When the smoke cleared, it was determined to be a fumble and Godwin recovery, BUT...

....due to a penalty, Godwin's touchdown was taken off the board and their offense took over at their own 30. They didn't make it back to the goal line again.

The PH offense's second "down and goal" series of quarter four ended with Waller running for his life, tackled at the five on a fourth and goal, as a Brian Houchens touchdown run earlier in the drive was negated by, yep, a holding penalty.

Godwin's last hope ended when, with some questionable time management with some three minutes left, they used their last timeout of the second half to discuss a fourth down play deep in their own territory. Rather than punting to try to pin the Pats deep and ask their defense for a three and out, they went for it. Quarterback Dane Forlines was stopped on a great one-on-one tackle by Terrell Archer.

Josh Thomas broke a 2nd down run for 1st down yardage, and Godwin couldn't stop the clock.

GOOD NEWS:

---More rushing production. Josh Thomas had some hard yards, and put the dagger in the Eagles' heart rushing for that first down at the end. Brian Houchens was solid in the opening drive.

---Glimpses of Waller's Best. Jay completed a huge 2nd half pass to Gibson Vaught in double coverage after slipping in the pocket to keep one 4th quarter drive alive, went 4 of 7 for the night, with no interceptions.

---Indvidual defensive efforts. BIG kudos to Ryan DeRusha, Montel Minor, Andy Joyce, as well as Terrell Archer, for each making one-on-one defensive tackles at key points in Godwin second half drives to either cause a loss of yardage or a turnover on downs.

BAD NEWS:

---Learning to close. Salesmen will tell you nothing is sold until the "close". Gotta have a signed deal. The Patriots' offense had the pen in hand twice in the fourth quarter and couldn't score the dagger touchdown. And, Kenny Mock had a sure pick-six late in the fourth and simply dropped it.

---Glimpses of Waller's Worst. One ill-advised lob throw in the first half fell harmlessly to the ground. The ill-advised shovel pass attempt broken down earlier would have been disaster, except for Godwin committing the penalty that negated what could have been the winning score.

The Patriots return to Ashland for Homecoming 2010 against Deep Run, a historically good team struggling mightily (they are 1-1, 1-4 going into their Saturday game at John Marshall). The Wildcats would like nothing more than to pin the Patriots with their first District loss.

For now, it's simple for Patrick Henry. They're tied for first with mighty Hermitage in the Colonial. The way Division Five teams (Clover Hill, Hanover, Atlee, Petersburg, Dinwiddie) are playing this season, the Patriots, even at 7-3, probably wouldn't have enough VHSL points to make the Division Five playoffs as a wild card.

To extend the 2010 season to week eleven, the Pats must win out. They're the only team left that can win the District other than Hermitage, essentially, unless there is a major upset in Hermitage's future (they have Freeman, TJ, and John Marshall the next three weeks).

It will be fun to watch this young team and its coaching staff respond to the challenge and I look forward to these Patriots putting together that "complete game" performance. Congrats to the Pats for a very hard-fought win, filled with lessons that can help this team make it to the next level.

Patrick Henry Football: At the Halfway Point

When Patrick Henry fans collectively went, "WHEW!" last Friday night about 9:15pm, willing their Patriots to an important 16-8 home win over pesky John Marshall, the Patriots, in their first campaign under Coach Sam Hart, found themselves in the midst of a three-game winning streak, with a record of 3-2, 2-0 in the Colonial District.

There are almost as many questions after five games of the 2010 campaign as there are answers. But, conversely, there is much more to be optimistic about than there was before opening night. Here are a few of my observations after viewing the first five games.

1) "A Closer Knit Unit"---The 2010 version of the Patriots has matured in front of our eyes in five quick weeks, none moreso than week three at the Tomato Bowl. It would have been easy for an 0-2 Patriot squad, down 24 points after only 18 minutes of football, in Mechanicsville, to mail it in, will themselves to their second straight season of winless football in Hanover County and start looking ahead to the Colonial District. They, instead, chose the road less traveled. And, once the 25 point comeback was complete, as I watched Jayrin Waller run across the field with the Tomato Bowl trophy, I saw a young program take a huge step forward. Since then, I've seen more of a Patriot "unit" rather than a group of players wearing the same uniform. Going through something, both negatively and positively, either galvanizes or rips apart. This Patriot squad did the former. And it took the disappointment of the first 2.3 games, as well as the comeback, to do so.

2) "We Can Do It"---It's common knowledge that Hermitage is the prohibitive favorite in the Colonial District this season. Everyone else seems to be playing for second place. Different teams look at this challenge in different ways. With the Pats coming off their 3-7 season of 2009, it seems their attitude towards this is, "Why Not Us?" The schedule is most friendly to the Patriots, as they are the last team that has to climb Mount Hermitage and attempt the upset of the year. Now that TJ and John Marshall are behind them, the Pats look ahead to a tough Godwin squad on the road (especially their defense), a down Deep Run team coming in for homecoming, a currently-winless Freeman team on the road, and a J.R. Tucker team coming to Ashland who are not as deep as they were in '09 when they finished 8-2 and beat PH in overtime. In other words, the table is set. If the Patriots take it one step at a time and handle each assignment given them, then, come week ten, they could go to Hermitage with the District Title at stake, which will probably be the only way PH can extend their season. So, again I ask, "Why Not Us?"

3) "Consistency"---The one caveat, looking ahead to weeks six through ten, to me, is a desperate need for consistency. The 2010 Patriots have yet to play a "complete" game in all three game phases. When they do, they can beat most Colonial District teams at home, compete on the road, and have an outside shot at Hermitage. The current 3-2 record has come due to a classic comeback, being worn down by Hanover and Atlee, and home wins over teams they should have won.

If there IS consistency, especially moreso on offense, then we could be in for a very exciting second half of the season. If not? We'll discover quickly just how far the 2010 Patriots, at their current maturation level, can go.

PH Boys and Girls fall to Godwin in Volleyball

Leslie Smith had 19 assists, leading the Eagles girls volleyball team to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-13 win over Patrick Henry. The Patriots fall to 1-1 in the Colonial District, 8-6 overall.

Meanwhile, the boys team met the same fate, falling to Godwin in three sets, 25-19, 25-16, 25-22. Andrew Thompson led the way for the Eagles with 6 digs, 6 kills and an ace.

The PH boys team falls to 0-1 in the Colonial District, 4-7 overall.
