Atlee Names Molloy Activities Director

Atlee High School announced Thursday night that Ryan Molloy, who currently serves as Activities Director at Mills Godwin High School in Henrico County, will become the new AD at Atlee effective July 1st.

Molloy will replace Dave Kannewurf, who announced last month he would be leaving for a similar post at a private school in Hawaii. Kannewurf tells RVA Sports Network he expects to leave by the end of the month to begin his new position.

Historic Journey Ends for Randolph-Macon Softball....

The 2015 season came to a wet and disappointing end Sunday afternoon in Newport News as region host Christopher Newport completed their second victory over the Yellow Jackets during the weekend, 11-6, to earn a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament Super Regional next week in Salisbury, Maryland.

For Randolph-Macon, it ended a topsy-turvy, crazy three-day odyssey on the diamond, where they finished 2-2 in the regional, and ended this historic season with a record of 28-12.

After a wild, come from behind 8-6 first round win in nine innings over Ramapo College, the New Jersey Athletic Conference champions, on Friday, the Yellow Jackets returned to Captains Field Saturday to face the hosts. Randolph-Macon fought hard, but fell to Christopher Newport 3-2 to drop to the elimination bracket against Salem College.

The Yellow Jackets and Salem were tied when darkness suspended their game. Restarted Sunday morning, freshman Skylar Toth's two-run homer in the 12th started a four-run rally that proved to be enough to eliminate Salem 8-6, earning a berth in the championship round against the Captains.

But rested Christopher Newport spotted Randolph-Macon four first-inning runs, scoring ten runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, to pull away. Two rain delays due to subtropical storm Ana lengthened the day for the Randolph-Macon faithful, with the Captains wrapping up an 11-6 win just after 5pm, over seven hours after the Salem game was resumed.

Randolph-Macon ends their season with a promising future, though they must replace the double-play combination of power hitting shortstop Sharese Jarvis and leadoff hitting second baseman Amanda Sopko. Relief pitcher Carly Alford provided a boatload of leadership on and off the field this season.

The Yellow Jackets will return Bagley in the circle, hope for a return to freshman form from Kelsey McLaughin, and offensively enjoy another season from juniors catcher Madison Gilman, first baseman Katie Woody, and center fielder Sierra Ford. Add the late season surges at the plate from Harley Jones as well as Toth, and Randolph-Macon will, once again, be championship competitive in a very difficult Old Dominion Athletic Conference come 2016. History Today: Randolph-Macon Softball Begins Quest For NCAA Title

For the first time in school history, the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets softball team will participate in the NCAA Division III Tournament beginning this afternoon.

The winners of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament two weeks ago, the Yellow Jackets (26-10) square off in the first round of the double-elimination Newport News Regional at 1pm against the RoadRunners of Ramapo College (28-12-1), winners of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

The winner advances to the second game on Saturday in Newport News in the championship bracket versus the winner of today's second game between host Christopher Newport and Salem College. The loser faces the loser of the second game in the third game of the tourney in the elimination bracket Saturday morning.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY for PH Friday Morning.....

Due to Music In The Park, please note the following from the PH administration.

On Friday, May 8, 2015, Patrick Henry will host Music in the Park, a band and choir competition. Schools from Virginia and Maryland will arrive via buses, some as early as 7:45 a.m.  Due to these extra vehicles, you will see the following changes in the school parking lot:

• The parking spaces at the front of the senior lot, next to the grass, will not be available.
• Several spaces in the senior lot will be blocked off. 
• The loop in front of the school will not be accessible.
• The first row of the senior lot will not be accessible.
• Parents dropping off students will be directed to the second row in the senior lot.
• Please follow the directions of the NJROTC cadets who will be directing traffic.

The event should end by 1 p.m., at which time all restrictions will be removed. Thank you for your cooperation.

Yellow Jackets Hire Josh Merkel To Lead Men's Basketball....

Josh Merkel, once an assistant under Nathan Davis, has been named just the fifth men's basketball coach at Randolph-Macon in the past 59 years.

The announcement was made via press release by the College Thursday afternoon. Merkel will be formally introduced at a 1pm press conference Monday, and we plan to be there for complete coverage.

R-MC Softball Adds Late Doubleheader; Earns #4 Seed in ODAC Tournament

Randolph-Macon has scheduled a doubleheader this afternoon (Wednesday) against Richard Bland College in Ashland. Games will take place at 3:30 and 5:30pm.

The Yellow Jackets finished fourth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings at 12-8 and will begin play in the ODAC Tournament in Salem Friday at 12pm against fifth-seeded Guilford.

Tentative 2015 Football Schedules Coming Together

There are still several holes to be filled via announcement, but as of Wednesday afternoon, via credible online sources, this is what we know about the new era of high school football scheduling with Patrick Henry moving to a Capital District schedule. Also, some Hanover County schools are taking advantage of a rule set forth two years ago allowing regular seasons to be begin prior to Labor Day.

If a week doesn't hold a game yet, it is because it has not been finalized or publicized by the school.

NOTE: October 23rd will be, to our knowledge, the first time ever that there will be two football games involving county teams playing each other held on the same night, when Atlee is at Patrick Henry while Lee-Davis will be at Hanover.

Randolph-Macon Falls Two Points Short of Final Four.....

Lamont Moore scored 18 points, and Randolph-Macon overcame withering defensive pressure from Virginia Wesleyan in the second half to take the lead, only to see the Marlins shut them down late and seize a 49-47 war in the NCAA Division III Round of Eight Saturday night at Crenshaw Gymnasium, ending the Yellow Jackets' season and their school-record 25-game winning streak.

The Yellow Jackets still had a chance to win with three seconds to play, but needing to go 94 feet to the basket. A perfectly designed play got Chris Hamilton the ball on the baseline, but his jumper at the buzzer hit the left side of the rim, bounced off the right and landed on the floor. The final chance to extend the season was gone.

Ironically, the 25-game winning streak began in Norfolk December 3rd with a 55-47 win at Virginia Wesleyan. Randolph-Macon entered the game 3-0 against the Marlins this season, including an 81-74 overtime win in the ODAC Tournament Championship on March 1st.

THE WRAP: Randolph-Macon Advances To Round of 8....

The free throws did not fall. The rebounds were still not up to expectations. The senior point guard was limited to just 18 minutes due to foul trouble. But, championship teams must overcome these types of adversity in order to seize the prize, win the day.

In the end, Randolph-Macon found ways to keep a pesky St. John Fisher Cardinals squad at bay, winning 64-57 to capture their 25th consecutive victory and advance to the NCAA Division III Round of Eight tomorrow against familiar Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Virginia Wesleyan.

"We knew coming in this would be a tough game. They are well-coached, they defend," said Randolph-Macon head coach Nathan Davis, who improves to 9-5 in six seasons in the NCAA Tournament. "We were fortunate enough to make a few plays to get a lead, and do things to hang on down the stretch."

The Yellow Jackets never trailed, and were only tied once, at 9-9 with 14:12 left in the first half. But like the Thanksgiving family guest that doesn't leave, the Cardinals, champions of the Empire Eight conference and owners of an 18-game winning streak of their own this season, wouldn't go away. Tyler Hart, one of five Cardinals to average in double figures, exceeded his point average with eleven in the first half to help Fisher stay within five points, cutting the lead to three at intermission at 29-26.

Joe Hassell continued his strong postseason in the paint with a double-double, 21 points and ten rebounds. The points were distributed evenly with ten in the first, eleven in the second half, as he drew and his teammates drew foul after foul against a bigger, stronger Cardinals squad.

The issue, though, was the Yellow Jackets didn't connect at the line. Shooting just 56 percent (14 for 25), the door was kept open for Fisher throughout most of the second half. The Cardinals went on a 5-0 run in 74 seconds to cut the lead to three again at 55-52 with 2:54 to go. The usual under four minute media timeout hadn't happened. Davis was still comfortable.

"This time of year, you've got to make shots, but you've got to make the right play," Davis explained. "I didn't want to call time, then end up with another timeout. Our guys knew what to do, got Akeem (Holmes) the ball, he was able to take it to the rim and make a shot."

The basket from Holmes, who only had four points, was the backbreaker. Randolph-Macon countered with a 6-0 run of their own sparked by Holmes' basket at 2:21 left, ended with authority a Lamont Moore ended a fastbreak down the baseline with a dunk. It was 61-52 with 47 seconds left.

In addition to Hassell's 21 points, Badger and Chris Hamilton each had ten points, while Lamont Moore and Mike Silverthorn had five each.

So, despite 41 percent shooting, struggling at the line, and their point guard sitting more minutes than playing, the Yellow Jackets advance to the Round of Eight, where they face the Marlins, who eliminated Dickinson College 75-65 Friday afternoon at Crenshaw.

No public tickets are available for the Saturday night game. Tip-off is at 7pm. Randolph-Macon last made the NCAA Division III Final Four in Davis' first season: 2009-10. They have a chance to return to Salem in less than 24 hours.

Randolph-Macon Hosts Rounds of 16, 8 in NCAA Tourney

Randolph-Macon announced Monday they will host one of four Round of 16 Sectionals, which includes a Round of Eight game, in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

In Friday's Round of 16 doubleheader, ODAC rival Virginia Wesleyan will face Dickinson College at 5pm. Randolph-Macon will host St. John Fisher, Empire Eight Conference champions from Rochester, New York, at 8pm.

The winners will face each other on Saturday night at 7pm at Crenshaw Gymnasium for a berth in the NCAA Division III Final Four March 20th in Salem, Virginia.

Randolph-Macon earned their berth in the Round of 16, their second in three seasons, with a 78-65 win over Catholic Saturday night.

State Indoor Track Championships Moved Again.....

Will the indoor track season ever end?

Both the 3A/4A and 5A/6A State Championships, postponed from February 27 and 28 to March 5 and 6, have been postponed again due to the expected winter weather for Thursday.

The 3A/4A State Championships will still be held at the Tolsma Center in Lynchburg, but are now Monday and Tuesday, March 9 and 10.

The 5A/6A State Championships will still be held at Boo Williams SportsPlex in Hampton, but are now Monday and Tuesday, March 9 and 10.
